Beijing bid farewell to the athletes of the world tonight with an explosive Olympics Closing Ceremony from the Bird’s Nest.
Sixteen days of competition in the XXIX Olympiad drew to a close as it began, with a stunning display of Chinese culture, arts, history and sportsmanship. There were drummers once more, acrobats, singers, Placido Domingo, and, well, more fireworks.
The athletes of the world will reunite in 2012 in London. To mark the British invasion a double decker bus became a mobile stage for singer Leona Lewis (from the X Factor Rebecca Wilson, not Idol), Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and David Beckham.
The Chinese erected a human tableau known as the “memory tower” adorned by hundreds of acrobats as singers and dancers performed below.
China ended the night with another amazing fireworks spectacle.
