Holy axings! Graysons project canned.

Sorry, Robin. Back to the batcave for you. The CW Network cancels plans for a spin-off series.

Barely a month after it was announced, America’s CW Network and Warner Bros. TV have scrapped their plans for The Graysons – set to revolve around Batman‘s sidekick Robin in his pre-Caped Crusader days.

The decision to yank the project came from Warner Bros. Pictures Group president Jeff Robinov, who initially gave his blessing but changed his mind in recent days.

“Warner Bros. TV never had 100% clearance,” said one executive familiar with the project.

The CW Network had been counting on The Graysons to fill the void left by the anticipated series end of Smallville.

According to studio insiders, Robinov has decreed that Warner Bros. “rethink its DC Comics strategy” and as a result didn’t want to do anything big with a DC franchise at the moment.

“The studio has opted not to go forward with the development of The Graysons at this time as the concept doesn’t fit the current strategy for the Batman franchise,” the studio said in a statement. “Warner Bros. Television is currently working on several replacement options for the CW.”

It’s understood that “The Dark Knight” helmer Christopher Nolan never signed off on the TV show; one insider said the helmer was uncomfortable with having a TV show related to the Batman franchise on the air. But according to the studio, the decision to scrap the show rested solely on Robinov and not Nolan.

A script had not yet been written for The Graysons, which was still in early stages of development.

  1. I said it was a bad idea!
I also said that they should do a series that features the “League of Super Heroes” idea that they have used in Smallville … Green Arrow, Aquaman, and the others with the occasional geust appearance by Clarke Kent … Lots of hot guys and girls and endless possibilities for interesting adventures!

    Jack!

  2. Good thing the show / concept was axed before it became a reality.
Hopefully it means that Smallville will be extended to Season 9.

The latest episode was the best episode this season till date. IMO Season 8 is one of the best season’s so far.

  3. Sounded like such a bad idea for a series.

What would the show be about? He was from a family of acrobats who died when he was 8 or 12 depending on different sources. So what would they bump that up?

And all the interesting crime fighting stuff with the character is after he was taken in by bruce wayne. the young justice league, becoming nightwing ect.

So what, it’d be about a young teenage boy or younger, who’s lives in a family of travelling acrobats who.. what get’s himself into trouble? solves crimes? But isn’t a super hero yet, and has no powers, none of the post batman gadgets and resources.

At least with small ville, clark has powers.

  4. Leaving aside the nauseating Variety-speak of “helmer” (sheesh!) for a moment, Nolan would never have to “sign off” on anything. He doesn’t own the rights, and those that do surely don’t give a toss about what he might be “uncomfortable” with.
