Nine sells Daisies, Chuck, Privileged, Terminator to Foxtel.

Nine has sold four key US titles to now air exclusively on Foxtel from next month.

As previously hinted here, Foxtel has acquired now broadcast rights to Chuck, Privileged, Pushing Daisies and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

They will begin airing from January.

Foxtel’s Brian Walsh said: “In obtaining these compelling, quality U.S. programs, Foxtel reinforces its robust commitment to provide our subscribers with more exclusive and first run programming.”

This is not the first time Nine has on-sold some of its programming including Gossip Girl (now airing in rerun on Nine), The OC and The West Wing -to name a few.

TV Tonight understands Nine felt the shows were too niche for its audience, despite promises earlier this year some of them would air in 2008.

Press Release:
FOXTEL announced today it has secured a range of exclusive new U.S. programming for its Owned & Operated Channels following an agreement with Channel Nine and Warner Bros.

The new series, Chuck, Privileged, Pushing Daisies and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, will all screen exclusively on FOXTEL from early next month. Under the deal terms, Channel Nine has relinquished its first run window to FOXTEL, which will have exclusive first run rights to all series.

FOXTEL Executive Director of Television and Marketing Brian Walsh said: “In obtaining these compelling, quality U.S. programs, FOXTEL reinforces its robust commitment to provide our subscribers with more exclusive and first run programming.

“We continue to deliver the premium programming across a range of genres to our viewers – ahead of other television networks – and the new Warner Bros series add to the already impressive line-up of first run series screening on FOXTEL this summer including the hit shows Gossip Girl, Entourage, America’s Next Top Model, Project Runway and American Idol, as well as Australian programs An Aussie Goes Calypso, and new series The Phone.”

  1. Wouldn’t these shows have been useful in filling the lineup for Channel Nine’s new multi-channel which it is allowed to begin broadcasting in January 2009?

They probably won’t begin broadcasting on January 1, however I would have been willing to wait a little longer to watch these shows on the new channel.

  2. Yay Terminator, season 2 has risen above it’s namesake and keeps getting better and better. Pushing Daisies in season 2, also great, albeit less singing which is a shame, but do we need to keep rubbing salt into these wickedly grotesque wounds!?!?! Can’t pieman touch himself and bring him back to life!?!?! Curses heroes and it’s dwindling quality, stealing Bryan Fuller back thus confirming PDs status as lifeless as a stiff after a second touch….
Now when does the Reaper come!?!?

  3. Really wanted to see Daisies, i’ll have to keep downloading Chuck

They could of used for their SD channel in ’09. they don’t think like that though.

  4. Grinspoon, PD has been axed in the U.S. and Chuck and Terminator are recieving very low ratings. As for Privilaged i’ve only ever heard it mentioned once. Usually (although there’s always exceptions) shows that rate badly in the U.S don’t rate hear. So whilst they may be good shows they probably wont recieve the ratings that they deserve.

  5. It is a pitty about CH 9 not airing chuck.
It is very funny and more importantly one of the stars is an aussie!
Yvonne Stahowski was even on another channel 9 show. Sea Partol

  6. Not good news for the majority of the population that doesn’t have – and never will have – Foxtel. Or even for those who DO have Foxtel but wanted to see these excellent shows with decent picture and sound quality.

And the fact that daisies, Chuck and Terminator are considered by Nine to be “too niche” even for summer programming speaks volumes about just how dumbed-down and bogan Channel Two And A Half has become. And they wonder why they’re losing viewers by the truckload.

All three are seen in nice crisp HD with 5.1 sound at my place though. Piracy is the only way to see decent television in this country these days.

  7. they sold PD! not exactly the news u’d expect just days after gyngell said he wanted his network to have more ‘warm hearted’ shows

more ‘warm hearted’ was always going to be a challenge for 9 because 7 has rafters, greys, bones, betty, private practice, eli stone, RSPCA and find my family. 9 losing their only warmheart from america is a definite step in the wrong direction.

great show, dissapointed that most of Aus won’t see it.

  8. what a dog act of 9 to show us the first season of TSCC and then prevent us from ever seeing the second season. with the others we don’t know what we’re missing because they never even began but is this a first for showing us 1 season and then shafting it to pay only? with this sort of stuff and ONE happening foxtel may lose all the sport subscribers but they will start getting drama viewers in droves. i am now actually considering pay tv whereas before i never did because there was enough to keep me occupied on FTA. also with 9 selling all their shows what exactly are they going to be offering on their second SD channel?

  9. More reasons to keep a Foxtel subscription I say, with Fox8 now screening some decent US series

I don’t think Chuck would ever fit in with the Nine audience….it could have possibly worked over at TEN, but alas we know Foxtel will give the series a good run
January looks like a good month for Fox8 – Gossip Girl, Chuck & Terminator just to mention a few

  10. I saw a preview of “Chuck” and was looking forward to seeing it on 9 – oh well.

What gets me is when are the free-to-air networks going to realise that not everybody in Australia has payTV? For me I have had to choose between getting a broadband internet connection or PayTV – I can’t afford both and the internet connection won out.

Maybe they should have saved some of these shows to air on their new digital channels next year.

  11. This is great news. As a foxtel suscriber, im very happy. Fox 8 is quickly becoming the best channel on Australian TV. It Now has exclusive rights to Gossip Girl, Chuck, Terminator, Kyle XY, Greek, Privlaged, and Dollhouse. Now only if Seven would sell them first run 24, nine add Fringe to the list of onsold shows and Ten first run Smallville, it would be the top aussie network. I wish they got One Tree Hill back, its been reloacted to Arena, but as the CW proved, it works great with GG. Add Australia Next Top Model, as well as first run Amreicas Next Top Model to the list and this is a great chanel. I also love Sunday night animation domination, which is simular to Fox in the states, all 5 animated comedies are played before most ppls bed time….im talking to u Channel 7.

  12. This is great news. Less shows for Nine to screw around with. At least Foxtel is consistant. I assume they will be on Fox8, and SciFi, well at least I hope so, as they can be shown in their true 16:9 formats.

  13. Billy, i disagree.

Terminator fits more for cable, its a good show, that keeps getting better, but yeah free to air, it’s what you’d stick on a HD only channel.

Chuck and Pushing Daises have everything to be big hits if positioned properly. Both could reach wide demographics. Chuck especially would be a gold mind for advertisers. It’s one of the best show’s on tv. The explanation of the set up of the show sounds dumb, but it’s a really good show. Lots of fun, good action, good comedy, good characters, stories ect. One of the stars is an Aussie which always helps on aussie tv.

Everyone I know who’s seen Pushing Daises absolutely loves it, it is also one of the best shows around.

Both could be hits, but the networks don’t want to go for drama these days, unless its generic cop shows. This is entirely why the younger demographics are shifting to foxtel.

  14. David, did Nine end up broadcasting of all Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles season one? Or will some of the season one epsiodes premiere on Foxtel?
