SBS unhappy at awards edit

SBS isn't happy that its sole win at the AFIs wasn't broadcast to viewers.

SBS head of television Matt Campbell is unhappy that its sole win at Saturday’s AFI Awards was cut from the broadcast.

In accepting the won best telefeature/mini series East West 101 producer Steve Knapman said ‘switch over to SBS in mid next year to see the new series’ in his speech.

“It’s pathetic that they seemed to have cut us out,” he said.

Nine responded, saying the awards were produced by an outside company.

Several awards were also dropped from the broadcast, but TV Tonight understands this was a decision made prior to the event due to time constraints.

  1. Nothing was edited out – Nine just showed the international version, which omits some material of little relevance to local audiences.

Their charter allows them to do this, in order to take advantage of natural breaks in the programme…

(In other words, suck it SBS – what goes around comes around.)

  2. I’d be unhappy aswell. as if we needed to see underbelly win 6 times. we got the point.

and time constraints… these award shows have never finished on time ever. i think people would have understood. especially as the AFI’s do not waste much time during the show.

another example of the big guy bullying the little guy

  3. I got half way through a comment last night where I said that Nine’s editing was quite obviously brutal and designed to emphasise Underbelly Underbelly Underbelly Underbelly Underbelly but left it on a Firefox tab and forgot 😀

However, my impression while watching the show (on delay, on one of those ad-skipping EPG-pirating PVR things that Nine wants dead, appropriately 🙂 was very much that it was a Nine-directed edit, and that even more so, it was a *TV*-directed edit.

I last attended the AFI Awards back in the year Bad Boy Bubby was getting accolades, and TV has been creeping in to the ceremony inexorably. But this year’s broadcast… well, you wouldn’t even know it was the AFI Awards any more. Barely 20% of the running time, if that, was film awards.

Stephen Curry was brilliant though, and I absolutely would love to have a beer or three with Elissa Down, who made me smile every time she got on the microphone just by being her unpretentiously goofy self 😀

Oh, and covering my unported previous comment’s points quickly, the sponsorship / product placement was tacky and overbearing (that Macquarie Bank/Wealth/Greed/Whatever to-camera piece was nauseating!) and if Nine had to edit out the Schembri comment, the least they could have done was cut the reference to it after the break as well…
