TV Tonight 2008 Awards: voting opens

We may all be in summer mode, but what better time to look back on the year and remember the year's winners and losers?

We may all be in summer mode, but what better time to look back on the year and remember the year’s winners and losers?

It’s time once again for the TV Tonight Awards -your chance to let rip on what was fabulous, inspiring, entertaining, dreadful, abysmal and lacking any creativity.

As with 2007, this is a fairly large survey with some 30 questions, so be sure you have the time to complete it before starting. It should take around 5-10 minutes.

You can skip any question except a few demographic questions at the end. The survey pertains to first-run television that aired in 2008, divided into Australian & International categories.

Last year there were a lot of populist, unsurprising wins, so this year TV Tonight encourages you to be discerning. Remember, programmers will be watching!

To refresh your memory on some of the year’s shows, here are some links some of the year’s industry nominees:

2008 Emmy Nominations,
2008 Logie Nominations,
2008 AFI Nominations,
2008 ASTRA Award Nominations,
2008 AWGIE Nominations,
2009 Golden Globe Nominations,
Screen Australia 07/08 Production Report

If you are nominating an American dramedy check Emmy links to see if they qualify as comedy (ie Desperate Housewives) or drama (Boston Legal). Screen Australia’s 07/08 Production Report includes some lengthy, helpful lists. Note some links including Logies and ASTRAs include 2007 shows which would not qualify for voting here.

Voting will close up to and including January 1st 2009 with the winners announced in the first week of ’09.

  1. i think satisfaction or canal road would have to be up for worst show of the year.

for best show i reckon underbelly or bogan pride. both were outstanding australian series.

  2. @ali: the wednesday episode was never a new ep. the new ones were on tues 8:30 the highest they got was around the 1mil mark (there was tough competition)

a repeat used to get 1.5 now theyre getting 800k and thats in primetime, the 7:00 usually got less so i doubt that we will see 2.5 men at 7:00 in ratings. especially as home and away gets 1.3mil

  3. You can be discerning and still rate popular and unsurprising choices as your personal ‘bests’ 🙂

With that said I must be part of the many who like 2.5 Men, I hate obscure dreary shows that critics love but usually the public hate..

  4. I agree Craig, and Eddie wasn’t bad on ACA.

@ella and Alex ; most people turned off 2.5 men due to excessive repeats. The new episodes on wednesdays still did well.

  5. Like most people outside of Melbourne, I dont care for Eddie much at all but voting him worst male of the year is a bit harsh given the only airtime he had was hosting ACA for a week…

  6. great idea david, and thanks everyone for the ideas. 2.5 men is definately the most overated show of the year @alex: not anymore, it struggles to get 1mil.

i put shelly and eddie as worst female/male, rafters as best show and well deserved, did anyone else consider jessica marais for best female? (rachel from rafters). for “should be axed” i was torn between kerri-anne, domestic blitz and antiques.

  7. I cant believe i forgot to vote 2.5 men as worst show of the year. Its been on that much it should of been at the top of the list!

Many people vote Packed to the rafters as the best show?

  8. Thanks for all your work on the site this year David, you do a great job, by the way, I saw you quoted in the Brissie courier mail the other day about why viewers have deserted FTA TV in droves this summer, I assume this was in all the other News ltd papers also..your star is certainly on the rise.
    Merry Christmas

  9. haha is it wrong that i am more excited to see the results for “worsts” than “bests”

i’m with lee123 re: 2.5 men, i’m sure there are worse shows on SBS at midnight or something but 2.5 men is definately the most overrated.

shelly craft should be a candidate for worst female. she is so fake and annoying.

i hope 30 rock, rafters, and spicks and specs win something

  10. lol I voted Eddie as worst male personality, and he has barely even been on air this year! Even a little is too much for me.

I was a little stumped with the best Current Affairs type show question…

  11. I hope people vote Border Security for “worst Australian show” and “show that needs to be axed”. Now that Big Brother’s gone this thing is the biggest abomination on television. Its pretty much just half an hour of racist propaganda depicting tourists as conniving intellectually-impaired foreigners with poor English. If anyone actually thinks that the people they present on this show are an accurate representation of the multiculturalism of Australia today, they are sadly mistaken. Crap like this just reinforces on ignorant stereotypes and paranoia. It was a toss up between Ramsay and Ray Martin for Worst Male personality but in the end Ray Martin came out on top.

  12. From the description of the show, I’d have to say the worst show would probably be Monster House. But i haven’t seen it, and don’t plan to either. I will be voting though.
