The (high) definition of Homer

And here's the zippy new title sequence from the first Simpsons episode to go out in HD.

10_simpsons_lgThe Simpsons airs its first ever HD episode in the US today, and marks the occasion with an extra long new title sequence.

Most media are calling it a “new opening title” which I guess refers to the section before they reach the couch. There are added characters, gags and a new aerial shot. Even Grandpa Simpson gets a look in.

Once they reach the couch, clearly we’re into a one-off extended sequence.

While it remains to be seen how much will stay and go, I guess it’s likely the pre-couch section is a permanent shift -note, no more girly scream from Homer as the car pulls into the garage. Doh.

The TV itself is also a cute change.

South Park is also going out in HD from March 11th.

  1. As someone who is currently studying Film & Television at University, the first thing we learnt was the ethics behind the Australian Television Industry.
All of the networks are responsible to their share holders and thus will create the cheapest content for the biggest return.
Ten’s ONE is a perfect example. They will simply take content from other providers in the US at little to no cost and package it with those sports it already has MotorSport, Beach Cricket etc for a higher ad revenue. By ensuring that ONE is on both SD & HD they will be able to charge advertisers more money, than they would have if ONE was only on a single channel.
Sports is cheap to make. It is safer than investing in own content as they are taking a gamble with potential profits if they dont capture the audience they are aiming at.

  2. re: Johnny 1.5

    11 will be a replica of 1 and 12 a SD version of 1

There’s no space left for 2 HD channels and a SD version too.

    1/11 & 12 – ONE SPORTS (2 channels 1 HD and 1 SD)
10 – TEN Digital (SD only)

SC10 viewers look away and wait until late this year

  3. 24 and Lost were also only in SD in Sydney, which is a bit disappointing. On the HD channel they had repeats of desperate housewives.

Yeh im disappointed that OneHD will be fully Sports. They could easily make ONE HD a hybrid of ONE Digital and the old Ten HD.

Im actually surprised that Ten is jumping into the sports market, it would have been easier to imagine channel 9 taking that opportunity. But, Ten was first to the mark and so they deserve it. What have channels 7 and 9 done? Nothing as of yet.

So although One HD isn’t the Ten HD we hoped for, ten should at least be applauded for taking the initiative in multi-channeling.

  4. Lipstick on a pig. The Simpsons used to be great (1991-1993), but now it’s just a stupid animated show featuring the Simpsons characters. The current writing is atrocious and nothing like the smart, witty scripts and stories of the earlier years.

HD for just life support for this (now) brain-dead show.
