Universe adds more cast to Stargate spin-off

Lou Diamond Phillips joins Stargate SGU which already features Robert Carlyle.

ldpMore stars, including Lou Diamond Phillips, have been announced for SGU: Stargate Universe which began production last week in Vancouver.

Actors Ming-Na, Elyse Levesque and Alaina Huffman will join the previously announced stars Robert Carlyle, Justin Louis, David Blue, Jamil Walker Smith and Brian J. Smith in the latest adventure which promises to be edgier and younger in tone.

A two-part premiere being directed by Andy Mikita (Stargate Atlantis, Stargate SG-1) is expected to premiere in October 2009.

SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civillians, who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack.

The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth. Faced with meeting the most basic needs of food, water and air, the group must unlock the secrets of the ship’s Stargate to survive. The danger, adventure and hope they find on board the Destiny will reveal the heroes and villains among them.

  1. why doesn’t it just go straight to scifi instead of having to go to channel 7/prime/gwn first cause its a joint sy fy/space channel co production, well ill probley most likely watch it while in the US like I did when stargate atlantis premiered

  2. Will wait for it to come out on Blu-Ray and watch it then in true HD video and audio.

Can’t be bothered with FTA anymore and the constant time shuffling and holding back of episodes till just before release on Blu / DVD.

  3. i wont watch (its not my thing) but i think the fta networks(i.e channel 7) will stuff the australian public again , channel 7 will start 2 months late stick it at 11:30pm at night and wont allow other networks like SCI-FI showing it at a decent time slot,

but after what the channel 7 CEO said yesterday or whatever we may see it on 7SD2 at the right time but i dont think so.
does any one know how well 10HD sci-fi Thursday went because channel 7 may of learned something from them?

  4. So I guess that means we won’t see MacGyver…sorry Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) or any other of the stars from the other two series making guest appearances.

It will be a long wait – if it ever makes it to free-to-air TV here.

  5. I still think they should have kept Atlantis going. It rated well enough, so why not?

I have my worries about this show. What’s curious however is that when it was announced, there was all the talk of a younger cast, seems to have thankfully not come true.

Part of what makes stargate good, is that it is fun. You have cool action, likeable characters who have fun with it. It doesn’t make the mistake of always taking itself seriously.

While I really like shows like BSG, they lack the fun, and there are very few other shows that have this. I also like the one off episode format fitted around an overlying story arc. I really worry this new series will aim to be too much like BSG and in doing so sacrifice one of the main reasons the SG series have been so good.

The star gate shows just filled a nice little tv viewing niche, which won’t be filled when it’s gone. I fear those making the decisions at the network don’t understand the appeal of the success and what set it apart.

  6. Lou Diamond Phillips has been getting good roles on TV series. A shame his film credits arent as good. Great looking cast for SGU. Really hanging out for it. Still rather bitter about Atlantis’ cancellation though.

  7. Robert Carlisle and Lou Diamond Phillips, doesn’t get much awesomer than that, the last time I saw Mr Phillips he was on the nine mutilated editing job scifi mini series Triangle. SciFi fans had to stop watching after it was realised up to 3 hours had been edited out of the show. I personally ordered the DVD from Amazon US and paid a hefty postage price to get it here in 2 days, but it was worth every cent.

Can’t wait, October is so far away 🙁
