Memo: please pull this show

It isn't often this site actually recommends a network pull a quality series off air.

tug-o-warIt’s not often this site actually advocates for a network to pull a quality show off air.

But TEN should really yank The Office. It’s just being wasted now.

In just over a week it will air at 1:50am in the morning. The show was previously screening on Sunday nights but has been bumped later and later due double episodes of Dexter. This Monday morning it screens at 12:50am after two eps of Dexter, but a week later it also has to wait for highlights of Telstra Swimming Championships. That means it ends at 2:20 am!

Surely only fans with IQ, TiVo or a trusty DVR are actually going to see these first-run episodes? The Office is an Emmy winning series, how on earth can a network see this as worthwhile?

TEN would be better off pulling the series and giving it a better timeslot when it has the time.

Compared to Seven’s elevation of Scrubs to prime time it’s all the more stark…

What do readers think? Should TEN pull The Office rather than give it a 1:50am timeslot?

  1. Didn’t know it was still on. Was up late at night, nothing was on tv, watched some crap, turned to channel 10 and the end credit for the office were rolling. Devastated. Instead of them yanking it they should try it in prime time. It can’t be any worse than the crap they show at the moment. And look at 2.5 men. IT took a while before it did well and now all types of idiots watch it. Imagine what a quality program like The office could do for ten.

  2. while i have been enjoying the show when its on sometimes at around 11… how would people even know this show is on at 1 50 am? 8pm fridays…get a fanbase. i mean nine tried out two and half men, even after popular friends lead in… and still couldnt manage viewers all until last year…u need to give the office a go ten!

  3. Ten held onto this show for most of 2008 hoping for a better timeslot/compatible lead in, but it just didn’t happen. they just don’t get it. So it is absolutely better to have it on than not have it at all. Hopefully those who don’t have a Tivo/PVR/VCR can watch it on DVD or TV1 soon.

  4. Dude, there’s no way Ten should pull the episodes, because if they don’t air them then the DVDs will never be released.

1.50 in the morning is better than not at all – it’s ridiculous that we’re only up to the first half of S3 on DVD.

  5. I agree with Bindi, everyone get yourself a PVR – got one a year ago, the best investment ever. I watch my fav shows at my convenience and forward the ads. Like 24, Lost, Call Girl, Dexter, The Mentalist – (clashes with House).

  6. David, while I agree with you that a 1.50 timeslot is beyond pathetic for such a brilliant show, I would much rather have it on in the wee hours of the morning then not at all. But yes, Channel Ten should really be ashamed of themselves. They should either put it on straight after after Rove or as another poster suggested, put it on Friday nights after the new episode of the Simpsons (again, another show that has been given a terrible timeslot).

  7. Despite being pissed off about The Office situation on TEN, airing it at 1.50am at least will get episodes out of the way, I’m happy with that, just as long as the DVD’s get released, I bought all the season from the US, and I probably will continue to do so, and starting Seaosn 6 I think I may even download considering the exchange rate is so bad with the US, but I will fork out the $$ for Season 5 on DVD.

  8. how can ten think showing one on the us top shows in the early hours of the morning is a good idea, ita not even at a watch-able time, i think it would be a great idea to show it at 8pm fridays after the simpsons as well, as the have similar demographics and many people who watch the simpsons will probably stay around to watch the office.

  9. networks have people making decisions who have absoultely no idea what the viewer wants or watches. They are so arrogant. Why put a show on that late when heaps of people love to watch it. I really think that free to air tv is losing the plot.

  10. if people don’t have a PVR they should buy one, i can’t understand how anyone can survive without one, i live for that machine, it is the best money i ever spent. and yes ryan is right if they air on 10 then that clears the way for the dvd release, so get it out of the way and then people can buy/rent it. some shows come out on dvd before they screen on tv it is not a hard and fast rule mikey, it all depends on what kind of contract they have but in this case the season 3 dvd release was most definately held up by 10, it caused them to split the release into 2 halves, the first half came out months ago and as soon as 10 finished airing season 3 they listed the release date for the 2nd half as april 22nd.

  11. that is totally crazy!!! i am a huge fan of the office and i can’t believe they are so stupid. there are clearly tons of fans out there which want to watch the show. i am sure i read somewhere online that Season 3 Part 2 DVD is going to be released in April – which is freakin awesome!!

  12. My fear would be that if they take it off, it may not come back. Ten has done it with many shows – they are pulled and never seen again. Perhaps late at night is better than not at all?

  13. TEN need a kick up the arse for treating this show so badly.

This show has potential to rate well here, it is hilarious, plus Steve Carrel has become a household name since the show debuted. I’m sure it could rate around the 900k Mark which would be considered a success for TEN would it not? They could create a few comedy lineups, they have

    – The Office – Everybody hates Chris – Rules of Engagement – Worst Week – Simpsons – Futurama

I can’t see why these shows can’t be used. Everybody hates chris really grows on you. I hated it when I first watched it on TEN years ago, but when I was in the states for 2 months, it was on every afternoon in repeat mode and I got hooked, I liked it and would watch if TEN started airing it again.

  14. I got into this show back when it was in a double with Ronnie Johns on Sunday nights – now you can’t find the damn thing so I’ve given up, I’m sure I’ll see it again when TV1 starts showing Season 3.

I’d also like to point out that the same problem exists with these HD only shows – how many viewers actually have HD or a HD Set Top Box, For two years Ten farmed all manner of shows out to HD which is resulted in the weird situation (for myself) where I’m watching Season 4 of Battlestar Galactica before having seen one minute of season 3! Simply ludicrous.

Come Summertime Ten need to give The Office the 7pm slot and give the 6pm slot to Everybody Hates Chris – two great sitcoms currently going to waste

  15. @ryan – is that true with regard to DVD releases? If so that’s crazy!

NBC and others should say “Look, you have the show for 12 months, after that time we may release the DVD’s – if you haven’t yet aired the series then screw you”… Or words to that effect.”

Does this apply to all international distributers?

  16. The sooner the free to air networks make a fair dinkum effort to get their extra digital channels up and running the better.

No wonder Digital tv sales are slow if that’s how networks treat viewers.

With the new channels it would be hoped that shows like The Office get a timeslot they deserve and please a fanbase I know that it has.

  17. absolutely. The should have pulled this over a year ago, Am eagerly waiting for the series 3 part 3 to come out on dvd and can;t believe the way in which ten treat this. Brilliant comedy deserves to be put in a decent timeslot. Take a cue from Seven (Can;t believe i said that) and move it to primetime or in the 10:30 slot. It beats the hell out of Guerilla Gardeners or NCIS repeat after rrepeat after repeat. How i long for the day when tv used to show an entire series!!

  18. They should play it at 8pm Friday after the new Simpsons, for when they’re not airing Futurama in that slot (if that is the plan). Otherwise yeah it’s a quality show being wasted in a graveyard slot. They should be attempting it in prime time. I know they did years ago but that was when it first came out (I think) and the show’s popularity has boosted so much since then.

  19. ITA David, ch10 should have used The Office in the early evening, they have enough eps they could have run it 5 nights a week instead of The Simpsons to build a audiance like 9 did with 2.5 Men.

Late night (any time after 10:30) is bad enough but 1 or 2 am is just a waste.

Ditto for Dexter, why double eps, who is staying up until almost 1 am watching when they can get them on DVD to rent or buy?

  20. All I can say is, what a joke!! And yes, David, you are correct, 10 should remove it from it’s schedule, 2:20 am on a monday morning is absurd for this show. :-/

  21. No, just let them air the episodes so that we can finally get the DVD Boxsets released here!
The DVD’s aren’t allowed to be released until the episodes have screened, and we’re already two years behind. So anyone who still wants to watch the show has probably given up on 10 anyway, they should just marathon the episodes through the night so we can get the box sets!!
Having said that, I’ve been recording the episodes on Sunday nights and watching them on Monday anyway, so it makes no difference to me!

  22. Well as a massive Office fan, I feel it’s treatment and total lack of support has been woefull. I’d rather see it late at night than never when I’m on night shift, but obviously this isn’t ideal.
The show hasn’t built an Aussie audience so it really needs to be shown same time, each week, without fail. Perhaps have a 7.30-8.30 spot with new Simpsons which seem to come and go on Fridays or whenever they are on (or not on).
