Safran ‘crucified’ in Philippines

TV satirist John Safran is reported as participating in a crucifixion re-enactment near Manila.

safran1TV satirist John Safran has had himself crucified during bloodied Good Friday rituals near the Philippines capital of Manila.

AFP reports that an Australian, identified only as John Michael from Melbourne, was nailed to a wooden cross in Kapitangan town, near Manila. Photographs, however, clearly identify the man as personality John Safran.

Safran, who was half-naked and wearing a long-haired wig with an improvised crown of thorns, joined the Filipinos in a procession carrying a huge wooden cross to a crucifixion site, flanked by men in Roman centurion costumes.

Safran could be heard moaning loudly as the nails were driven into his palms and as his cross was hoisted up, allowing him to hang for about five minutes.

When he was taken down, the centurions rushed him to a medical tent for treatment.

Safran, who was raised in Judaism, would not say why he had joined the ceremony but an Australian companion is reported as saying, “this is a personal thing for him”.

After being discovered on Race Around the World, Safran presented a number of his own series including Music Jamboree, John Safran vs God and Speaking in Tongues.

This year he will appear in John Safran’s Race Relations on the ABC.

  1. Not all christians care about forcing our beliefs to other people. We only want to tell other people about what we have learned.Only idiots with limited knowledge on basic sciences can say that there is no God.Intelligent people who understand quantum physics and the nature of the universe can attest on the existence of divine providence.Everything in this universe is mathematically beautiful and perfectly designed.just as Einstein said “God does not play dice with the universe.” Since there is a God,Safran should get worried.

  2. Christians everywhere should feel very offended?
How about everyone being offended by Christians and them forcing their believes onto everyone else??

no no… the Christians are right and everyone who doesn’t believe in their tales of jebus are wrong…. keep forgetting that

  3. mysticmonkey, no news articles I’ve read mention John lying about why he got crucified. The only mention of that ‘fact’ was on John’s Wikipedia entry, and that part’s since been removed due to there being no verifiable source.

He did have nails put *through his hands* – to me, something too painful for just a ‘publicity stunt’. John Mangan in The Age says that this might – could, maybe, not definitely – make it into the series.

  4. This is obviously a publicity stunt for John Safran’s new ABC show “Race Relations.” What is upsetting is he is blatantly mocking the horrible death of Jesus Christ for the sake of his own selfish notoriety. Christians everywhere should feel very offended. He even lied about his reasons for getting crucified by telling the people in charge he’s doing it because his mum has cancer. As a fact, his mum died of a heart attack in 2003. Shame on you John Safran!

  5. Wow. I thought this might be for the benefit of television, but there are no mention of cameras – so it’s off John’s own bat. Good on him I guess, hopefully he finds what he’s looking for.
