  1. I think Adam should have sung ‘One’ or “If I Can’t Have You’ rather than ‘Mad World’… whether that would have got him over the line, I don’t know.. probably not. I think Kris was simply more popular among Idol voters… some people were turned off by Adam’s perceived “screeching”… some preferred Kris’ clean-cut “wholesome” image. I think it’s naive to think there wasn’t an anti-gay sentiment involved.. one only had to read the homophobic comments on the AI discussion boards to be reminded just how frightening some Americans can be.

Personally I thought Kris was pretty bland. I liked Danny originally (his version of the Rascal Flatts song was outstanding), but I thought he played it too safe and came across as too calculated towards the end. Adam was the complete package, though.

And note to Simon Fuller.. Please get rid of Kara.

  2. And besides – what are you doing on the internet – and a TV website nenetheless – if you don’t want to know who the winner is? You’d have to be in complete media black out to avoid the news as it is world wide news – especially avoid being on line, avoid using Twitter (where Idol topics at one stage filled the top 10 trending topics), etc… Completely agree with David on this one.

I think Adam would have the better career, usually its not the winner that is most successful as the popular vote does not necessarily chose who should win.

  3. I’m a huge Adam Lambert fan, but I’m actually glad he didn’t win. I think being locked into the ‘idol’ contract and the constraints that would incur, would be incredibly frustrating for someone as individual and diverse as him.
Congratulations to Kris, he has a really good voice, but when it comes to actually buying an album or concert tickets, Adam would always be my choice!

  4. Winning is hardly the “kiss of death”.. The careers of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks and David Cook have been going great since winning Idol in their respective seasons.. Even Fantasia is doing well in the US Urban market..

That said, I do believe that Adam will do extremely well..

  5. Why do people always jump to such conclusions? Did it cross anyone’s mind that Kris is a very good singer and musician? All the judges agreed yesterday that Kris won the first round but Adam was the overall winner of the night. The fact he was able to get one over Adam yesterday speaks volumes and you’d be very surprised to know that perhaps, most of the voters had no idea Adam is gay. These sorts of voting shows do throw up surprise winners from time to time. The good news for Adam is he is guaranteed to have a good career although I wouldn’t be buying his album as I’m not into his kind of rock. My favourite was Danny!

  6. Sure – just would’ve been pretty easy to write that the winner is in the body of the store, not in the title. A lot of websites say ‘spoiler’ in the title and only declare the answer in the next part of the story if clicked through. I saw that you were blogging after I saw the title of the story with the winner in it.

    1. Very difficult to write a story about an “American Idol Upset” (which, let’s face it is what the real story today is) without indicating the winner.

And when, using your suggestion, is it ok to write up the winner? Tonight… Tomorrow….

It’s a spoiler if it hasn’t aired in Oz, such as Desperate Housewives finale. Otherwise we can’t sit around and wait until everyone has watched everything in their own time and deliver an up to date, reactionary television blog at the same time. I’ve had this debate before. To remind people of this I specifically posted a note in the Top Pick today on the front page as I’ve done for Idol, Loser etc.

  7. I am angry at the decision! Kris didnt deserve to win and i blame all the young females out there for voting for him. It annoys the crap out of me that Adam who is the best singer in idol for some years doesnt win. It isnt fair and this is the first time America has really got it wrong.

Adam’s duet with Kiss was awesome i couldnt believe it.

When the result that Kris came through i felt like throwing up. I seriously did. I didnt expect Kris to make it to the final 3 let alone win it. I feel for Adam because he deserved it and had it snatched out from under him. I noticed that Simon didnt seem happy during Kris’ final dismal performance.

  8. Did you really want Adam to sing that cheesy lame song at the end, bring it out as a single and also release a rushed pre-written album? I think he gained credibility by not winning.

  9. What a great show and the best male singer won.

Strip away all the “Adam” hype and you will find that Kris is the better singer and that Adam tends to scream a lot.Don’t believe…then listen to every performance of his.

Only time will tell who is the most successful.

  10. I’ve never watched a full season of any version of this show, yet I watched every bit of this season due to Adam’s incredible talent.
Such a shame and a shock that the didn’t win.

I wonder how much of the reason Adam lost was that so many people thought that he’d surely win and didn’t bother voting for him.
Kris on the other hand was the underdog and his fans would have made sure that they voted.

How about that final show though! The yanks really know how to pour it on if they have the ratings and money. Absolutely outstanding show with A grade guests.
    Loved it!

  11. I’m extremely happy with the results. Americas are finally voting right 🙂 I followed Kris from his auditions, and now he has won 🙂

    1. Brad, the winner was titled in the story. Also there was a clear indicator that this would be logged as it happens in the Top Pick today.

TV Tonight rule of thumb is and always has been very simple: once it has aired in Australia it is past spoiler deadline. American Idol aired this morning live on FOX8. In comparison Eurovision results were not published here until they aired on SBS, despite other media running it. This is a television blog. To not run results of Idols, Losers, Dance etc simply puts this site behind in publishing of news. To modify that rule of thumb also only confuses readers.

  12. I’m really happy with the result! Kris is an incredible artist!!

Both Kris and Adam will be successful in their respective genres, so there’s nothing to worry about!

  13. 100million votes is a big response!
It is not surprising that Adam lost as it is probable that the conservative biggots were mobilised through their churches etc to “stop the outrage” … if he had come out after the final then he may have won easily … but the good news is: it is usually the runner up who has a bigger career!
And since when has the best performer or song ever won these kind of events … including Eurovision in that too! (1975 is the exception!)
    Jack!

  14. Msg for Benno:

Adam Lambert was By farthe most creative, energetic, passionate singer this season of Idol has seen.
Kris was not even a close second vocally. And this is a show about singing.
To be honest, Kris’ charm and good looks carried him to the finale. It was always going to be Adam vs ……….
But, for Kris to actually get up and win makes me feel sick!
Watching Kris sing is hard work. And this season he was a “meh” contestant.

Adam Lambert! You are the champ! And I’ll buy yer record!

Kris Allen will disappear in to obscurity for sure. Perhaps playing in Pubs doing knock offs or originals is where you’ll find him.

    America voted the wrong winner!
    Booooo

  15. Benno, only someone who hasnt watched the show this year would make that comment….Adam was far and away the best performer by a country mile this year

  16. I don’t watch the show, but just because the contestant who was gay didn’t win does not make the voters homophobes. Maybe they liked the other guy better for a hundred other reasons?

  17. well, i took a sick day from work to watch this today…it was always going to be a big ask for conservative america to crown a gay Idol, particularly in light of the pictures of adam pashing a guy that surfaced.
Such a shame though, Adam was far and away the best performer this year and indeed is the best performer that ive ever seen on this genre of show, he will go onto big things…his performance with KISS on the finale was fantastic!
Simon Cowell didnt look at all impressed, when everyone (including the other 3 judges) were giving Kris his standing ovation, Simon was sitting at the desk with a dirty look on his face.
They progressed to black president this year, but gay Idol was to much for the US this year…

  18. Homophobes of the nation unite and select Kris Allen as their american idol for 2009.
Everyone knows that this is a complete outrage and america have made their biggest mistake yet!
When Adam Lambert puts out his album i will personally buy 2 copies!!
From adams first audition i wanted him to win 🙂
    he is a Roooock Goooood!

  19. I cant beleive america voted kris over adam-shock horror, at least adam can take his time recording a Good album, i doubt we will remember kris in 6 months time…….
