Karl Stefanovic, the morning after

UPDATED: Nine denies assertions Karl Stefanovic was drunk on his post-Logies edition of Today, but Today Tonight was happy to ask questions.

karlstefanovic21Dear oh dear.

Historically, the Logies haven’t always been more about the ceremony itself. They’ve been about the post-Logies too. How often we have heard tales of celebrities hooking up, punching up, falling down, along with reports of what may or may not have gone down in the Crown toilets?

This week the biggest story to emerge involves Karl Stefanovic and his on air performance on Monday’s Today show.

Last night Today Tonight went to town with a beauty asking whether Karl had been drinking too much and was in any shape to host the Monday morning edition of Today, which aired from inside Crown. Their description was way more colourful of course.

With matching footage (which you can see here) it looked like a good get. The story even made reference to other celebs who had been apparently intoxicated including Mike Willesee, Molly Meldrum and John Stamos. It left Andrew O’Keefe off the montage, while his incident was an off-air moment, so was David Hasselhoff, which it included.

Significantly it left out the glaring point that Today is now a lot closer to Sunrise in ratings than it was 12 months ago.

And to think they’d all been the best of industry friends on the Red Carpet the night before?

Today Nine has denied Stefanovic was drunk.

“Karl was tired, yes, but drunk no. Emphatically,” Nine spokesman David Hurley told the Daily Telegraph.

“Stefanovic has been missing from Today for the past two days simply because he is filming a 60 Minutes story on a critical third heart operation for a desperately ill 5 year old child. Nine supports Karl to the hilt.”

Did you get that?

In Seven’s defence Nine, along with other media was all over the Andrew O’Keefe story when it hit news last year (although it says it declined to pay for footage). Stefanovic’s hosting on Monday did seem a little more, umm, vibrant than usual.

You can decide for yourself where the truth may or may not lay, with this selection of clips.

UPDATED: Today on Today Karl said:

“I guess the first thing I have to say is that yes, it was a very big Logies night, probably too big.

“I didn’t feel drunk when I woke up the next morning otherwise I would not have gone on-air. I like to think that I’m professional enough to have made that decision.

“But clearly from the vision that I have seen, I wasn’t at my best and what I want to do is apologise to anyone out there who may have, um, you know, been offended by my behaviour on Monday morning.

So, humble apologies to you all.”

  1. Stefanovic’s should never have gone on air, or been allowed to go on air in that condition. Glug, glug, snort, snort, say no more. Thumbs up 7, thumbs down 9. Nine savaged AOK, who wasn’t on even on air, and wasn’t doing anything socially unacceptable, so, “throw stones Nine, get rocks thrown back at ya”.

  2. The problem is Karl is such a k*** jockey even sober you could never work him out properly… I hope he is drunk every morning, it would explain a lot!

  3. Oh come on, so what?
That was funny. I don’t watch the Today Show but now I wish I had. I would have wet my pants laughing.

    Hooray for YouTube!

  4. Who is TT to be the ethics police. Their morals and ethics have been in question for an eternity, so perhaps they should not be so hypocritical.

  5. @ Ed
Yes, but AOK was having a night out, not hosting a national morning breakfast show. Also, as for finishing around 3am – they have the choice to a) not drink or b) go to bed after the ceremony and not attend the parties! It’s not like 9 had anything to celebrate!!

  6. i happened to see the story on tt yesterday and i have to say i was shocked but not surprised buy this personal attack from seven, if they want credibility they should run real news worthy stories instead of taking cheap shots at the competition like a little child, tt and aca just keep constantly reminding me what poor excuses for journalism they are.

  7. I will make the same comment like I did with AOK last year…who cares…. they are allowed to have a great night…and well he didnt look that bad to me…. and we wasn’t swearing or lying on the table being crude or anything…bit of a stretch if you ask me…if i could act like that when iam drunk, i would be happy!!! but iam more like AOK , but just not on a public street

  8. Karl was arguably not drunk, but tired… How would anyone else like to attend the logies, finish around 3, then appear on air 2.5 hours later?! AOK’s drunken ‘incident’ was very real, as opposed to Karl’s just being speculative!

Oh, and atleast with AOK’s incident, it wasn’t just Nine who ran the story, whereas this scandal, has so far been driven by Seven’s hidden agenda!

  9. I couldn’t believe this when i saw it on TT last night (i forgot to turn the TV off after the news, which i usually make a point of doing). What trash! Of course no seven celebrities were in that montage of drunk TV stars. Can’t imagine them running the same story if it was one of the Sunrise team in the same boat.

For the record, i never watch Today…but if Karl turned up like that every morning i’d consider switching over. Far more interesting.

  10. OMG – He’s steamed. Absolutely cringeworthy footage. I missed it when it happened, but i caught the apology this morning and wondered what all the hub-hub was about. I think C7 have relatively reasonable grounds to bring this up based on how much of a grilling AOK got over his (in his own time, not ;ove on air) night out. Of course they’re gonna go for Karl with this – and i think rightly so. I wonder if this’ll show up on media watch – now theres somethng I’d love to see 🙂

I dont know if I’m humoured or offended by that footage. I watch Abc2’s news (used to watch Today – but i found the Abc news gave me my morning news fix) – but I would have probably have switched off if i had been watching. No one likes being around a drunk when you’re stone cold sober. Yes, being extremely tired from complete lack of sleep can impare your speech, motor actions, thought process etc – but not that badly. My money says C9 shuffled him off for the past 2 days to do some ‘correspondence’ on a story so he could be taken out of the flack. Sackable – no, but I’d definitey call it a yellow card offence. It’s a funny story, but for morning Tv show, it’s just not acceptable.

  11. Just heard him on 2UE – He didn’t really deny it, just said he was tired. But said it didn’t looked great and was very embarrassed – and his wife gave him hell!

  12. Hah, hah, I saw his performance on Monday morning and said to the wife then, that Today Tonight will be all over this as pay back for ACA getting stuck into the A O’keefe story.

It was a shame that he had to apologize on air today as it was definitely more fun watching him in that “not drunk” state.

  13. Wow, he definately looked like he was coming down from a “jolly” time. I mean we are all only human, but what was 9 thinking letting him go on air. Just shows professionalism of people like Lisa and KAK I guess!

  14. I watched some of the show and Stefanovic did seem overly gushing at his co-host despite claiming to be very tired – wilkinson did seem embarrassed but I think you expect a little unpredictability the morning after the logies. What Seven have done is actually fuel more interest in Today and stefanovic, thereby taking more viewers away from the silly Sunrise family.

How Today Tonight can sit in judgement on any program or any host I will never know – this is the same program that allowed Naomi Robson to front a program covering steve irwin’s death with a live lizard on her shoulder….please…Seven shouldn’t throw stones because knowing Nine they will always throw them back… and a lot harder!

  15. Certainly looked the worse for wear on Monday and as someone that suffers from sleep deprivation, I do not buy that story, one of many Nine threw out there.
watched bits of Today this morning, swapping over from soccer during breaks, and Karl keeps promising to tell all and admits his wife gave him hard time.
