Push for Hey Hey revival

Whilst fans lament the absence of Hey Hey its Saturday, how realistic is is to hope for more than a reunion?

heyheyDaryl Somers has not ruled out a return to Hey Hey its Saturday to television, following a social networking campaign to return the show.

Last year Nine held talks with Somers to host a reunion special, after Foxtel was talking with him.

Today Somers tells the Herald Sun, “”There have been talks with David Gyngell and Michael Healy about a reunion show. You’ll certainly know about it if it happens.”

Those talks date back to at least September. But a reunion show is about the most that could probably happen.

The idea of the cast actually re-forming for regular work is, alas, about as likely as reuniting a pop band that made fabulous music together on-stage and were splintered by egos off-stage.

As a sentimental one-off, with a few key members, it just might work.

Otherwise Somers would be better utilised hosting a clip special once again or looking at new projects.

  1. Think Hey Hey has had it day and agree more with best of Hey hey shows which would actually do alot better than alot of stuff on 9 these days. There is definitely room for more light entertainment shows but something new, not old.

  2. they day nine put darryl flamin sommers back on TV for anything its time to pull the plug on the whole network…..he is a disaster hey hey is very 90s…wont work in 2010

  3. Daryl has been trying to get the show back on the air since the day it was axed. I certainly don’t need to see another “Best Of” clip show ever again. Or maybe in 10 years when I feel more sentimental and the Hey Hey clip shows they did a few years ago have been forgotten.

That said, there is a massive hole on Saturday nights and Hey Hey was a great format. As long as Daryl was willing to hand over the hosting role to someone new … and Red, Wilbur and crew stayed well enough away … I would be happy for it to return. I always thought if Daryl had been willing to hand over the show to a new host a couple of years before it was axed (Larry Emdur, for instance, was a great fill-in host) and trimmed some fat (the “cast” became far too big) it may have been able to continue.

  4. can’t we have a funny modern Sat night show no like hey hey but something more like Don’t forget your toothbrush or there is a great one in the UK called Takeaway,

  5. I had thought during the last few years of Hey Hey that Daryl should have stood down and introduced a new host as it looked like he would do for a time when others guest hosted. I think the format is still very appealing to many of us that grew up with Hey Hey but Daryl fronting it each week had definitely reached it’s used by date.

  6. IMO Nine should replay complete episodes of Hey Hey on Saturday nights. It could be called the best of Hey Hey and I’m sure it would rate. Each one could also be introduced by Daryl explaining why the episode was chosen.

    Hey I can dream can’t I 🙂

  7. I was pi**ed at 9 for taking it off, but its dead, its been gone way too long (or not long enough, bring back ‘its a knockout’ that’s been gone long enough and maybe ill be able to get that tune outta my head).

It might work if its not called Hey Hey Its Saturday and has a fresh cast, but similar variety (and Red Faces, with the gong and all) would be good.

  8. We need something good on TV on Saturday Nights on FTA cause thier is nothing on!. Look at the ratings on Saturday Night, There is barely 5-6 shows that break into the 1million viewer mark every week. Bring back Hey Hey!

  9. This is a great story about proving that even the older generation can get into Facebook – Surely a D Somers from NT is creator of the Facebook petition.

  10. Please, please, please!!! I would love to see that show back on air! Would it work as a regular show? I’m not sure but I would certainly love to see a reunion show at least. I miss Daryl’s corny jokes and exagerated showmanship on Dancing.

  11. Taken Out (Perfect Match), Temptation (Sale of the Century) and Wheel of Fortune have all flopped as remakes in the last year. Why would Channel Nine think that this remake would last?

Sure, HHIS was excellent in its time, but that is where it should be left.

  12. Wow, the bogans will be excited if that one comes back. They’ll have something to watch while they drink a few slabs and then go and do doughnuts and burnouts all through the western suburbs.

  13. Which “social network” is campaigning for this?

    Please let us know ASAP.

So we may have them killed 🙂

Come on, Facebook/Twitter/Whatever droids, don’t you remember the disgraceful ad-and-product-placement-fest that Hey Hey became towards its deserved end? Don’t you recall the almost unanimous cheers of joy and sighs of relief when the plug was pulled? (And I’m not at all exaggerating with that – at the time I worked at a music magazine’s office, and when the news came through that Hey Hey was dead, it was a celebratory moment).

Do you really think it’d be worth going back there again?

Myself, I’d rather have my reproductive organs ripped off.
