ACA lands ‘Kyle prank’ interview

Tracy Grimshaw will interview family members at the centre of the "Kyle & Jackie O" radio prank, while ACMA announces a radio investigation.

tg6Updated: Nine advises there was no payment sought nor offered for this interview, after an approach was made by the family to Nine.

A Current Affair will tonight feature family members at the centre of the “Kyle & Jackie O” radio prank.

The incident, in which a 14 year old girl admitted she had been raped live on air sent the radio industry into meltdown. It also led to Kyle Sandilands being dumped from Australian Idol, cited as no longer fitting the show’s “family-friendly” image.

Nine isn’t revealing much detail of its interview tonight other than to acknowledge Tracy Grimshaw will be speaking to family members.

Meanwhile the Australian Communications and Media Authority has today announced an investigation into practices for radio pranks which it claims may “not be keeping pace with industry practice and community standards.” It will look at what safeguards are in place for participants.

ACMA is calling for submissions from the public and the industry into commercial radio practices until September 30. The investigation is separate from any specific investigation into the Kyle and Jackie O Show.

Austereo is yet to confirm a return date for its controversial pair.

  1. well, seems as if it wasn’t an interview with the mother and daughter, but rather base on hearsay from family members, i watched the ad on the aca website to see if i heard wrong and i realised they don’t actually say the the interview is with the mother and daughter, but they certainly imply it.

  2. Not sure I understand what the Family gets out of a TV interview. Basically I’m skeptical that Channel 9 hasn’t offered them something. What is the benefit of going on TV to talk about this incident/issue? Channel 9 surely has to of paid or just to help with semantics have said they didn’t but gave them a car instead.

  3. great, what the situation needs – ACA with tracey grimshaw (sarcasm)
by showing this they are exploiting this issue even more now, let it lay down to rest – enough with it, goddammit channel 9 probably just for the ratings.

  4. like others have said i really do hope the mother get her well deserved blame tonight on aca , and while kyle, 2day fm etc do deserve blame so does the mother. i have heard almost nothing about the mother in media, it about time she receives some flack for her role in this mess.

  5. People make fun of me for watching Neighbours. At least I know it’s a soap and don’t expect anything else. Whereas ACA purports to be news but it’s just a really really bad soap.

  6. IMO the mother is as much at fault for this whole mess, she approved the radio interview, she asked the questions but is she being punished? And now I hear the investigation is called off, don’t the Police have a duty of care to investigate regardless of what the victim says?

  7. we can all see where this is going. Aca will interview the family etc – and TT will find the other side of the coin to interview. I’m sure they’re trying their hardest to land a Kyle / Jackie-o interview.

I sure as h3ll won’t be watching this pure & utter trash.

  8. Leave it alone 9…what a crock of sh**e..who gives a rats…ACA and TT are worse than radio…give me strength…id rather get me head stuck in a sewage pipe than watch this

  9. after seeing captions of tonights interview between tracy and the mother of teenage rape victim I was left wondering why the mother walked out in this interveiw and not the Kyle radio so called prank where her daughter was been asked personal questions regarding her sexual experiences. sorry just don’t get it “what was she thinking”

  10. Surely they will be trying to exonerate Kyle to make Ten look bad for dropping him. Can’t imagine the mother’s going to come out of it well. When o when will people learn to not go on these shows?

  11. @ Margaret completely agree. I hope that they don’t just focus on Kyle and his image/reputation but rather do some hard-hitting stuff like the irresponsible actions of the mother in question!

  12. I hope this interview will be fair and even and based on the facts of what happened, not based on the media and public hysteria that followed it. I personally hope that the attention shifts to the person who should have worn the blame from the start – the Mother!

  13. I saw the promo and Tracey is doing her usual overly-earnest “Don’t mess with me cos I’m a hard-hitting interviewer” routine. What a laugh! She’s as hard-hitting as a feather duster. Where’s Richard Carleton when you need him?
