It’s up!
The Optus D3 satellite rocketed into space from French Guiana at 8.08am (AEST) yesterday.
The launch will pave the way for expanded capacity for subscription television, free-to-air TV and voice, internet and radio services.
The satellite will take a few days to assume its orbit of 35,000km above Australia.
It then has two months of tests before its commercial operations can begin.
Now we can all get some sleep…

I hope their satellite doesn’t crash as often as their 3G network does.
At last now maybe finally we can have Channel 7 on Satelite, been waiting long enough, don’t let us down Channel 7
@Kathy – I think the launch was closer to 8.09am as they wanted to launch it early in the 1 hour window they had, but you could be right.
@Kuttsywood – but like I said it’s for the networks to bounce the signals around the country, not for the end user as the only dish I have on my roof is from Austar.
@Neon Kitten – go to TIO, get out of contract on network quality issues – thats what I did…
So does this mean Satellite subscribers will get 7, GO!, and ONE??? Or does Seven stick have a stick up it’s ass over C7?
“Now we can all get some sleep…”
I’ll be able to get some sleep once they start adding new channels. Two months of testing is enough time for something still to go wrong.
@mac from memory it launched 8.30am Sydney time 22nd August, or thereabouts. Optus have the launch available to view for anyone that is interested.
@Craig: There is One reason, why Sky decided to GO! with the FTA benefit angle.
What do Foxtel cable IQ2 subscribers have, that Foxtel satellite IQ2 subscribers dont?
A: Access to the FTA HD’s, One’s SD feed, and Channel 7.
@ craig, i saw skynews mention the satellite launch as part of one of their bulletins latter in the day and was wondering if they showed it live, what time did they?
Anyone want to make guesses on when the new channel’s start up?
I’m tipping if all goes well, November 1.
If only we could get proper 3G data coverage and speed for our 2-year-contracted iPhones. Ah, well. I guess Optus has other priorities that don’t involve its own customers.
OMG! Finally! How many years have they been trying to get the damned thing up there?
I watched the launch (live on Sky News) but I don’t get how it helps free-to-air, is it so the networks can bounce the signals for the new channels around the country?
