Geelong has won a nail-biting AFL Grand Final with 80 points over St Kilda’s 68 points.
On a drenched Melbourne day, the Cats snatched their second win in three years, denying the Saints their first premiership in 43 years.
The game was so close it was still tied with just minutes to go. The emotion was so overwhelming for some Saints players, they were in tears at victory dashed from their grasp.
For Geelong it capped off a big week after Gary Ablett Jr. won the Brownlow Medal.
Pre-show entertainment included Farnsy & Barnsy plus Mark Seymour, with the National Anthem sung by the cast of the Jersey Boys musical.
Commercial interests were all over match this year, with a Qantas jumbo circling the MCG as children sang I Still Call Australia Home.
Geelong’s #1 ticket holder is Daryl Somers, who returns to Hey Hey its Saturday next week, alongside Saints supporter Molly Meldrum.
The match screened on TEN and ONE.

@kirean, i wonder about that test pattern as well. why don’t they just broadcast the same thing on all channels. surely it’s not a bandwidth issue. ch7 broadcast on 7, 70, 71, 72, 73, and 74 24/7.
PD,
Hawks 2010!
Well done Geelong! Another great AFL Grand Final. I love our Australian game.
Im so sad the season is over now, whatever will I do 🙁
Once again shows why this humble country of ours has the best game in the world.
Any chance David you could post tomorrow the peak ratings if they are at all possible to obtain, particularly on a state-by-state basis? As well as the exclusive after match ratings on ONE?
Why would TEN decide not to simulcast the show from ONE HD to ONE SD? They showed a Test Pattern on ONE SD for the entire grand final broadcast!
Too bad I scheduled to record the final on ONE SD I guess. I thought that ONE HD=ONE SD for broadcast content. Clearly not.
Channel 10 are idiots.
Shows that are on TEN at the same time as ONE HD are never on ONE SD.
A great game. Crows 2010! Haha. Can’t wait to see what kind of numbers the game did in Melbourne. What’s the highest Melbourne audience for an AFL grand final?
On current ratings system 2005: 3.39m thanks to Sydney Swans in the game.
I think the true winner was iSnack 2.0 .. even if everyone thinks it’s totally naff. It’s all over Twitter getting even more ‘tweets’ than the grand final itself!
It was great to see a close Grand Final! Unfortunately it doesn’t happen very often, but certainly makes it a better game to watch. Congrats to Geelong, it would have been great to see the Saints get their 2nd flag, but the Cats were better on the day 🙂
@Blake just like you did. I find it ironic you post a comment complaining about people complaining on comments.
IMO it’s the comments that make the site, no matter who they are from.
Hey Blake – quit whingeing! 🙂
Its the econo… tv, stupid
Awsome coverage from Ten…much better than 7’s last year, Makes me wanna cry knowing 7 has got it again next year. They didnt take the opportunty to promote there shows other than MasterChef and NCIS, which is stupid, since that was probably what needed the least promoting. Should of seen adds for Rush, Glee, Idol, Three Rivers, Lie to Me. Ten should of taken adavantage not saying bombard us with on screen promos durning the game like 7 do, but during goals, promote your shows, the game its self it was amazing, still a draw about 1/2 way into the 5min warning. its games like this i love the 5 min warning, keept my mouth in my heart until Champan scored the winner with about 2minutes left. Great game, Great coverage. well done ten
haha u got told allan.
AFL doesnt interest me though…League’s the greatest game of them all!!
Fantastic coverage by Ten.
Seven take note great live coverage and great post-game interviews. No stupid Sandy Roberts questions.
great coverage by ten, i was happy they didnt flood the screen with promos, i saw 2, great game aswell, would have held onto the viewers right to the end.
And david its great we can come in here and comment about the biggest aus event without having to go to other sites
Since it’s Davids blog I think he can blog about anything he likes.
Congrats to the Cats, I was backing St Kilda, guess there is always next year.
Im a Hawks Supporter and was highly disturbed watching the Cats win. Hawks 2010! Yeah!
You layed down the law there David!
this really kept me watching. it will have much bigger ratings than the last few years. nudging 3mil i say.
As a rare poster, I think posting comments should seriously be shut off. Reading other peoples views and opinions that are most of the time incredibly stupid diminishes this sites quality.
All they do is whinge
Poor Molly. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t show up on the Hey! Hey! Reunion shows now.
The Saints premiership drought continues.
Bloody sucks. It should be the Saints in that picture.
David: He is probably just a saints supporter! haha 🙂
its on tv…. so why not…
We are Geelong the greatest team of all
since when did tv tonight become a sports blog.
Allan: What rubbish. The site has always logged key television events whether its sport, music, awards, memorials and more. I’ve even given an overview of the telecast not just the sports content. Why would I not cover something that will be one of the biggest ratings events of the year? Grow up.
