Salary cuts? That’s money for jam

Kerri-Anne Kennerley is reportedly the first to be offered a significant pay cut under new cost savings at Nine.

kakLate last month an article in The Australian speculated about the Nine Network looks to make savings of around $20 million, with salary cuts for executives and high paid stars.

Many stars signed longterm contracts with the network during rosier days. As Nine struggles to meet its debt repayments there is now more specific talk some are facing big cuts.

The Herald Sun reports Kerri-Anne Kennerley will be offered a significant cut on her $500,000-plus salary, which expires on October 1st.

Last time she was in contract negotiations there was talk over trouble getting her own business cards. How times change…

Other names on similar long term contracts include Tracy Grimshaw ($700,000) and Liz Hayes ($600,000) as well as Catriona Rowntree, Scott Cam and Tara Brown (all $500,000-plus).

Meanwhile those on significantly less money are Jules Lund, Natalie Gruzlewski and Shelley Craft.

Salaries for Bert Newton, Eddie McGuire and Sam Newman are believed to be safe. Nine is also dependent on Peter Hitchener in the all-important 6pm battle.

Others who walked rather than face big cuts include Mark Ferguson and Trevor Marmalade. The NRL Footy Show also saw Paul “The Chief” Harragon exit. This year Nine has also pulled back on overseas news bureaus and axed local shows such as Fresh!

But it has also been spending, with a new set for Nine News in Melbourne, plus productions including Underbelly, Rescue: Special Ops and the upcoming Hey Hey its Saturday specials.

  1. Out of Eddies 4 Million One Million of That Should be paid to Banksia Productions The Company responsible for Guess What Humphrey and a lot of now defunct Childrens Programming.
None should go into imports of Two and a Half Men unless we can be guaranteed all new episodes and no more reruns.
Some should go into the New Generation of Hi 5.
Some should go into bringing back the Price is Right with New Hosts(How Long can the Charlie Sheen Marathons at 7pm go for in all fairness?)
Axe the Antiques Roadshow and 4;30pm for some family friendly and childrens programming.
The Rest Goes into Eddies Bank.

  2. Looks like KAK will have to lay off the steam mops for a while. Off topic though, she looks a bit to me like an older version of Samantha Armytage in that picture.

  3. They should hurry up and give Ed Phillips and Livinia Nixon back their gameshow.

Here’s some interesting choices Nine might have overlooked….Amber Brown For 20 to 1 Host.
Humphrey Bear’s Show comes back and Eddie McGuire Once and For All Settles the Debt with Banksia Productions. Now Hosted by Charlie Sheen
Sorry… forgot to say great post – can’t wait to read your next one!

  4. Charlie Sheen’s birthday was yesterday – I’m assuming Nine spent heaps on his birthday present since they’d be trailing SBS without him. As for Kerri-Anne, this would be the perfect time to do a “Mark Ferguson” and defer to TEN.

  6. I agree with most comments on here. Eddie, Sam and Bert have very little relevance these days. I don’t deny their appeal back in the day but they are not worth what they are being paid. I think a certain CEO is too afraid to tell his mates goodbye

  7. Eddie must have photos stashed away of someone. Not only is he overpaid, he protects his footy show mate Sam, Dermott brereton has a cushy job on getaway and Shane Crawford a cushy job on any second rate show they can shove him in.

Bert does a clip show…and he does it no better than Bud Tingwell ever did. Did the late Bud get paid so much? i think not.

  8. why are 9 so precious about eddie. do they really think another network would jump at him and pay him more if they reduced his pay packet. even if he did walk, would it be that bad? if 7 lost AOK they would be in strife because no one else can do his job, same goes for shawn micallef and TBYG.

but eddie? he doesn’t give much of his own unique style to anything and he has such a selective vehicle to work in, and if he were to walk he could be replaced very easily by any gameshow host for 1/6th of the price, and it might even be for the better.

  9. How is it that Bert, Sam and Eddie – the networks highest paid – are safe? Surely the should be the ones getting cuts first. Nine have always overestimated Eddie’s worth and I have no idea how it continues to this day. The Footy Show survived just fine without him, and The Hot Seat probably would too.

  10. 9 should stop making reality shows with big cash prizes at the end that noone cares about. Eddie, Bert and Sam should also take pay cuts. If Eddie is still on 4 million a year, he’s really not worth that much.

  11. Kerri Anne appearing this week on TBYG on TEN maybe part of her ploy to get more out of Nine, or as Rutzie commented she could be the new morning presenter on Ten, but by herself.
Also we could do with a live midday show again, to oppose Ellen and The View. Kerrie Ann could do what she’s doing now but at midday and on TEN.
