Next up, Daryl Denyer?

Channel Seven's Grant Denyer wants his very own Hey Hey it's Saturday.

AGT+DenyerChannel Seven’s Grant Denyer wants his very own Hey Hey it’s Saturday.

According to the Herald Sun, Denyer is so dead keen on the idea of a variety-style show on Saturday nights he will make it part of contract negotiations with Seven.

The project would be a cross between Hey Hey Its Saturday, Rove and Ellen, with skits, pranks, overseas talent and visiting guests.

Denyer has more recently hosted Australia’s Got Talent and It Takes Two and filed for Sunday Night. Whilst both Red Symons and Molly Meldrum are Seven properties (that is, Meldrum is on a network contract), it’s optimistic to think they would appear on any form of copycat or hybrid show.

Meanwhile Hey Hey producer Pam Barnes also produced AGT with Denyer.

This isn’t the first time Denyer has been involved with a variety project.

In July 2008 he copped a broken rib while shooting a variety pilot for Seven. While impersonating Lleyton Hewitt he slipped and hit the bull bar of a car.

Of the project he said: “I can’t reveal too much,” he said at the time. “It’s a wonderful variety show, and it’s been a long time since Australia’s had one of these.”

Tonight the somewhat accident-prone daredevil re-voices the series Destroyed in Seconds for Seven.

  1. Go Grant!
    Great idea..love it.
Hey Hey for a new generation. Remember the people who said a kids Sat morn show wouldn’t work at 9.30pm? ..and then it ended up at 6.30!!!
Call it Thank God its Saturday!!

  2. Oh, please, God no! This would totally fail, especially with Denyer at the helm. Seven has copied many shows but no one can replicate the magic that Hey Hey It’s Saturday continues to create.

Seven, please do not go ahead with this.

  3. I dont think that 7 really copied all those programs from 9, dont forget that there is another major source of programming from the US and UK. All the same just different names!! 9 could have copied Good Morning Australia with Bert with KaK’s morning…….. Just different name , same format and same segments!

  4. While they’re being completely unoriginal, perhaps Denyer or Seven could even steal the name “Hey Hey it’s Saturday” for their variety show. It seems Somers Carroll have let trade mark rights to the name lapse and it is no longer protected.

Curiously the name “Hey Hey We’re Dancing” was registered in 2005… it appears Daryl had designs on being more than just the host of Dancing With The Stars at one stage.

  5. Lordy please don’t let this horror show happen! Denyer is a talentless twat and this would suck badly.

Hey Hey evolved organically over decades and can not be duplicated especially by Seven who are hopeless at variety.

  6. Is there any progamme that 7 won’t copy. Burke’s Backyard – Better Homes &,
The Morning Show – Mornings with Kerrie, The Today Show – Sunrise, A Current Affair – Today Tonight etc etec tec

  7. ummmm yeahh….
everytime i watch him host something, he tries waaayyy to hard and he’s actaully not that funny.

and mixing hey hey with rove and ellen…….yeeshk.
sorry grant, stick to driving yeah?

  8. If he’s so keen to make this variety-style show a part of his contract deal then I doubt we’ll be seeing Grant on Seven next year, not that that would be a bad thing.

  9. All TV hosts seem to be obsessed with getting their own variety show.

It’s an ego thing, I guess.

That’s the good thing about having a digital channel – TV exec’s can humour impatient stars by giving them a variety show on the digital channel. This fulfills 2 objectives – 1) Keeps TV stars happy and 2) Does no damage to the main channel.

  10. That story doesn’t make much sense given that while he was at 7, Daryl Somers tried in vain for another Hey Hey style show there.

If even he couldn’t make it happen at 7 I doubt Denyer would.

  11. Please, God No! I hate him with a passion.

I think it’s pretty clear these days that copying another show from another channel just doesn’t work.

Hopefully Nine get their Hey Hey back on air soon, with Daryl and Livinia. Nine could even sign on Red as he only gets a contract for every AGT series (I think). Nine also have plenty of other stars to be apart of the new version. I know it may seem like a weird choice, but Miranda Deakin who used to host Hot Source would be a perfect choice. She is young, down to earth, real and naturally funny.

And here we all thought Nine were the ones that did the copying?
