Next up, Daryl Denyer?

Channel Seven's Grant Denyer wants his very own Hey Hey it's Saturday.

AGT+DenyerChannel Seven’s Grant Denyer wants his very own Hey Hey it’s Saturday.

According to the Herald Sun, Denyer is so dead keen on the idea of a variety-style show on Saturday nights he will make it part of contract negotiations with Seven.

The project would be a cross between Hey Hey Its Saturday, Rove and Ellen, with skits, pranks, overseas talent and visiting guests.

Denyer has more recently hosted Australia’s Got Talent and It Takes Two and filed for Sunday Night. Whilst both Red Symons and Molly Meldrum are Seven properties (that is, Meldrum is on a network contract), it’s optimistic to think they would appear on any form of copycat or hybrid show.

Meanwhile Hey Hey producer Pam Barnes also produced AGT with Denyer.

This isn’t the first time Denyer has been involved with a variety project.

In July 2008 he copped a broken rib while shooting a variety pilot for Seven. While impersonating Lleyton Hewitt he slipped and hit the bull bar of a car.

Of the project he said: “I can’t reveal too much,” he said at the time. “It’s a wonderful variety show, and it’s been a long time since Australia’s had one of these.”

Tonight the somewhat accident-prone daredevil re-voices the series Destroyed in Seconds for Seven.

  1. Give it a shot Grant… the more Aussie TV the better.
@jed & macarhurblack… I’m sure the execs of TV stations do read this site but doubt they make multi million dollar decisions based on the opinions of a few.
Having said that, keep having them as all our opinions are valid but I do tend to agree with ang a bit in that it seems to be a bit of a slag fest at times as opposed to giving opinions that create debate and discussion that perhaps they might take on board

  2. I guess it comes down to format. Almost would decide after all the two netowks punchup. If it could out-hey-hey Hey-Hey Seven would have to have the midus touch (After out today-ing today that Today now tries to be Sunrise…).

But Grant ? Hey Daryl aint no Samy Davis Jr but hes family.

  3. @ang. the whole point of this blog is for people to comment and voice their opinion. If they don’t like a tv show, don’t like a tv personality or don’t think a show will work they have every right to say that. Maybe the networks should think about reading our comments and they might start reaping the rewards.

You’re not the first person, but i find it ironic that you come on here to whinge and bitch about people whingeing and bitching.

And there’s also a lot of comments on here that are positive opinions and comments about tv shows, actors, announcements etc. So take your own advice and quit your whingeing, and either get involved in the discussions, or don’t bother.

  4. This is another one of those ideas that will never go anywhere – remember when Hamish and Andy were said to be doing a local version of that Ant and Dec show for Ten? That never happened did it!

As for Denyer thinking he could be the next Daryl Somers – he’s not even the next Bryan Bury!

  5. @ang: I agree with your comments about copying shows but that’s it. You say:

“Ok so you hate ch7 and Grant Denyer, good for you, does the world need to know about it?”

No, the world does not need to know about it but the network executives do! This website gives people without an OzTam box the chance to have their say. Hopefully the decision-makers of the networks read comments on this site and use them to make their decisions. You also say:

“Not being a fan of Mr Denyer’s myself, Ill keep my negative judgement until or If I ever see the end product.”

So, you’re not a fan of Denyer’s but you won’t say anything until after the show is on the air. Then, let me guess, you’ll come on this site and compliain!!

So, now to my thoughts on Denyer and a variety show: Nooooooooooo!!!!!!

  6. He’s wayyy way to smug and smarmy to host a show like Hey Hey… Please no, Seven, he’s not the right man… Andrew O’Keefe on the other hand….

  7. @ ang. It’s called freedom of speech. If posters to this forum want to whinge, complain and vent their spleen, let them. I see plenty of posts on this website that are positive, so it is an exaggeration to say that it is non-stop negativity. It’s not. You are correct, though, about the lack of originality on our TV screens. All the commercial networks routinely cannibalise each other’s product because originality is in such short supply. They’ve been doing it since TV began here in 1956. Burkes Backyard = Better Homes; Bondi Rescue= Surf Patrol; Today=Sunrise; Neighbours=Home and Away; Rush=Rescue Special Ops. I’m just waiting for Nine to do a cr*p version of Packed to the Rafters. I’m sure they’ve got some awful family drama/comedy in development as we speak.

@pasha, yes, back in the early 70’s Mike Willesee did copy the format of A Current Affair from the now defunct ABC daily current affairs program hosted by Bill Peach called This Day Tonight that used to come on straight after the ABC nightly news. From memory, Willesee worked as a reporter on This Day Tonight before he went to Nine for ACA.

  8. For the love of Jesus, does anyone that contributes to these forums on this site do anything but whinge, bitch, moan and groan at anything?

Not being a fan of Mr Denyer’s myself, Ill keep my negatoive judgement until or If I ever see the end product.

I love this website, but after reading it for months and months I see the trend of negativity. Ok so you hate ch7 and Grant Denyer, good for you, does the world need to know about it?

As for copycat programming and Mr Dale surely you could back me up on this, Seven aren’t the only guilty party. Its a spoiler, they all do it. Seven had a megahit with Dancing with the stars, so Nine’s clone Dancing on Ice went in to battle. Ten did Bondi Rescue so Seven’s clone Surf Parol went in. Seven did Find my Family, so Nine enters the fray with its identical offering Missing peices.

Get over it all of you.

  9. God i hope not. Can’t stand him. He was ok as Sunrise weather presenter (although everyone since him has been heaps better imo). But everything else i see him on is woeful. Don’t let it happen Seven. I know you have your favourite “stars” that you like to put on every single show, but please enough of Grant. He’s just not that good. And judging by the comments, doesn’t sound like anyone would watch.

  10. LMFAO….7 had Darol. He wanted to dod Hey Hey on 7 for ages and it was part of the reason why he left 7. Now Hey Hey rates it socks off and 7 wanna copy it with a cringe worthy host. U missed the boat. Still 7 copied alot of Nine shows when they were in there prime, ACA, Berts Back Yard, 60 Minutes, Today. Now Hey Hey, despite the fact that these shows out rate nines version now, i doubt this would ever work, same as My Kitchen Rules
