Rove: time out in 2010

As previously tipped, Rove (the show) will be taking time off in 2010.

rmThe Herald Sun yesterday confirmed a radio tip on Monday that Rove will be taking time out from TEN in 2010.

“McManus has decided to delay the return of his self-titled talk show until later next year,” it noted.

One suggestion is that Roving Enterprises is looking to focus on The 7PM Project, which is understood to be continuing through summer.

Next week TEN has its 2010 program launch in which it will have to clarify more of its brands for February and beyond.

The network has previously indicated a desire to strip The Biggest Loser and MasterChef Australia from 7:30pm following The 7PM Project. Based on figures thus far that would be a risk, but summer buys the network more time to tweak its format.

Roving also produces Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? and Before the Game for TEN -the latter continues to enjoy good word of mouth.

TV Tonight hears the final episode of Rove this year on November 15 will still be shot at ABC Studios, but with a very different set-up….

  1. Maybe him and Paul McDermott can rethink their once hilarious material. These days, Rove makes one or two quick quotes at the beginning of the show (which used to be his key part) and then sits down and talks about jack all. Paul has lost what made him good, now his jokes are recycled and are lacking wit. More of just making a snide remark and making the audience go Oooooooohhhh!

  2. The show’s filmed Sunday afternoons, and the live act at the end is recorded even earlier in the day, with the audience made to pretend clap before and after the apparent performance.

  3. Rove makes himself out to be very puerile and immature, and I guess that’s why he hosts 5th Grader. Although I really couldn’t care less about that show and hope it gets axed anyway, he really needs to improve his other (self titled) show. It brings shame to the genre of tonight style shows, and in my opinion it’s in much more need of improvement than the 7pm Project which just has to find its feet. To be honest, the best thing for it would be to get a new host. None the less, it shall be nice to be rid of him temporarily at least.

  4. Since when has Rove stopped being live… I went the first year he dropped “live” from the title, and it was still live to air at 8:30 or 9:30… whatever time it started back then!

  5. Come on David, I’ll bite. Exactly what do you mean by a very different set-up

  6. Leno, Conan, Letterman etc do not film “Live” either, I went to a taping of Late Nights with Conan O’Brien in Sept 2007 in NYC and it was recorded at 5pm in the afternoon and didn’t air until midnight, but it was still recorded “as live” they didn’t “reshoot” anything they had the count in “Live in 3,2,1” they paused for the duration of the ad break whilst redoing Conan’s makeup / going over lines and made the audience applause on return, it was very “live” TV, as live as live gets without being in fact “live” I’m assuming Rove is the same, and that I doubt Rove being infact Live would have any affect on the programs performance or Rove’s humor.

  7. Rove needs to perform live… he is a stand-up/live performer at heart… that is when he is at his best. “Rove Live” worked for that very reason because they packed it with things that could go very wrong and he was in his element steering a ship that was at times out of control.
Now that he is pre-recorded it misses that edge and perhaps he has fallen into the comfort zone of knowing it can be edited if need be.
Either way it would be a shame not to see him back on the tele for all of 2010… but just so long as he comes back!

  8. Rove lost its zest due to a few things.
Ten stuffing up the start time – get it consistent ever week.
And please less formula – PetesSpace might be funny 2 weeks but not all the time, and Hughes has just lost it.Rotate your regulars and inject some fun.

  9. @Mike Retter: A catchphrase??? Um. No.

Rove McManus himself hasn’t lost his edge, I think the team has gotten stale, and the writing is falling back on familiar elements and wringing a concept dry. It’s a victim of its own success, in that it is desperately clinging to what they think works, but failing to find magic.

Like GNW, the show is at its best when it goes off-script. Whenever it sticks to the carefully prepared and deliberately promotional, it feels stilted and awkward. It needs to loosen up to bring back that spark of life.

  10. The less Rove / lowest common denominator tv there is the better. Hard to believe anyone finds him funny.

7pm project should continue but just ditch Carrie she is a bimbo and replace her with Jane Hall or someone.

  11. when rove returns next yr he needs a new looking set, to bring back some of the best segments around like what the? have bigger guests actually on the show instead of via sattellite, new prank segments, his show can become even better if he puts some hard work into it

  12. Something has to change. I do beleive he has to go back to his routs, what made him successful in the first place. Rude words, cliche and saying “Hermaphrodite” dont garentee funny. The fact is he can be funny but hasnt for a while. Things like “What the” should come back. It created an opportunity for improvisation with the audience reactions. One of the icons from the show. Actually they could publisise the return of what the before next season and I bet a few people will come back. The Hey-hey effect.

I think he shuld go and make a doco series or soemthing, expand a bit in genre, like Denton. When you are that powerful and can spread put your egs in different baskets. I think he could even make stuff for the ABC if he wanted.

Some soul searching is needed. What made him funny in the first place? He started on 31 with no budget, now he jet sets around the world doing celebrity interviews. and cracking deals for different shows on Ten.

I beleive it is about delivery. he used to have a knack of delivery, a certain character he would become, pronounciation. More often than not these days its some kind of zeitgeist humor that falls flat, some kind of “Dont go there girlfriend”
catchphrase. It aint over yet. Even if his show got cancelled the guy is young and iconic enough to redeem himself. I just think he needs to rediscover the intangable energy, the abstract thing that is comedy.

  13. I’ll miss Rove (the show) if it doesn’t return next year. It really is a great show.

Although if he is taking time off to make 7pmP better, then that is only a good thing. 7pmP is definitely a better show now than it was when it began.

  14. Will be interesting to see 2010 program launch for TEN.. even more whats going to happen with the 7PM Project. Doubt people will start watching it after all the negative talk. Get rid of everyone on that show for startes (except for Carrie) and get some new, exciting people! Charlie is boring, Hughsey clearly not right for the show..

  15. I wonder if their may be some pitter patter of tiny feet on the horizon – they are both mid-30’s, want children……….

    Purely my thoughts though!
