ttWestern Australians opened up their pockets to donate a whopping $6.4 million for the annual Telethon on the weekend. Given the recession it was still a big total despite being down on 2008’s $7.5m.

$1.5 million was donated by the Federal Government, with PM Kevin Rudd on hand to share in the good news. The event raises funds for Perth’s Princess Margaret Hospital.

Channel Seven stars for the 42nd event included David Koch, Larry Emdur, Todd Lasance, Alex Bistrup, the stars of Saturday Disney and retired local identity Jeff Newman. Musical performances included Jessica Mauboy, Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Courtney Murphy and Guy Sebastian.

Telethon has a long history in Perth, with many international acts including Sir Cliff Richard, Harry Connick Jr., Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Julian Lennon, Sammy Davis Jr. and Céline Dion and its famous appearance by Michael Jackson.

  1. Slip over to Ebay and slap a million down on the Michael Jackson hat their selling and they’ll only be a smidgen lower than last year with their total.

  2. They do usually beat the previous year’s total, but from memory, the extra million last year was donated by someone who’d won Lotto or bequeathed in a will or something.

  3. @Josh: i think the former Howard Government also made a generous donation to Telethon in their last year in office, but then that was probably in the lead up to the election so make of that what you will 🙂

  4. It was awful, Duddy on tv with Kockie again? Ugh. The Telethon raises money to make up for the government funding shortfall. So really Dudd just gave them money that they were actually owed, and decided to get brownie points for it. He lost WA in 2007, and is desperate to win. What a tool.

The actual event after the Channel 7/Labor lovefest was excellent, positive televison. Positive stuff rates well.

  5. I think Seven should do one in Sydney. When was the last time Sydney had its own telethon. Melbourne and Perth have theirs so why not Sydney. This is a fantastic result. Or even a national one would be great.

  6. i love telethon, i look 4ward to it every yr but lately the stars have been pretty average! yrs ago we used to get major international names but these days its all mostly 7’s cast from their shows. still good though and good to see another 6.5m raised for the kids!
