Twitter triggers MasterChef stoush

Age Columnist Winsor Dobbin has a lively conversation with George Calombaris after accusing him of "selling out" via supermarket ads.

gcA rather amusing article popped up yesterday in The Age after a stoush between MasterChef judge George Calombaris and columnist Winsor Dobbin.

Dobbin had Twittered about a “sellout” by the chef in doing promos for Coles Supermarkets, a major sponsor of the TEN reality series.

According to Dobbin, he received a phone message from Calombaris inviting him to ring back and discuss the matter.

Here are some select points he said were raised in what was obviously a rather lively conversation:

– Do I know how many kids MasterChef has encouraged to cook?

– I’m a moron.

– Do I know how much it costs to produce a television program like MasterChef or Celebrity MasterChef?

– I’m a moron.

– Do I know that Coles is a major sponsor of MasterChef and the program wouldn’t get made without sponsors?

– Did I know that MasterChef promotes sustainable agriculture and Australian produce?

– I’m not welcome at any of his five restaurants. Ever.

It got really interesting when I asked if George if the meat he uses in his restaurants comes from Coles.

– I don’t know where he sources his meat – so I’m a moron. It’s from the same source as Vue de Monde.

Is it from the same source as Coles?

Slam!

Matt Preston is also a food critic for the same newspaper.

  1. He can have a go about Coles, what about the Ovens. Which Chef uses an LG oven in their restaurant. This is something I could never understand. Why don’t they install commercial grade equipment for them to cook on?

It should be called mastercook, by no means Chef

  2. This ego-maniac, a qualified “masterchef”, wants us to believe he buys his fresh meat and produce from a Coles supermarket? Haven’t heard something this unbelievably hilarious since John Laws and Alan Jones sold me on what a great, customer focused company Telstra is.

  3. yep! winsor dobbin is a moron! – why shouldn’t George appears in Coles ads – especially as they are a major sponsor of MasterChef – good on George for standing up to him!

  4. This journalist is an idiot. If Calombaris wants to do ads for Coles, let him. Why is it considered a “sell-out”? Could Mr Dobbin please define exactly why it is a “sell-out”? Coles supplies foodstuffs to millions of Aussies, the sort of Aussies who watch Masterchef and who are familiar with George. I don’t really get why he is being criticised for doing this.

  5. god if i was offered money to appear on coles ads i would 2!! and all of you would aswell. the fact is coles is the best supermarket and are only getting better as their new owners change things. good on him.

  6. whats wrong with coles or any big supermarket? that’s where most people get their groceries from and its better than buying fast food. Its bloody snobbery that whole growers market palava. Yeah they’re great, they’re also much more expensive and I’d say most of us can’t really afford to pay $5 for one organic banana. So i guess all of us who buy our fruit, veg and meat etc from Coles are also sell outs? Real nice. That bloke giving george a hard time is a knob.

  7. If he’s compromising quality for his sponsors, or representing coles as the best supplier, when he himself wouldn’t touch it, then this “free country” of ours is being duped.
