Warning on fake salespeople

The government is warning people to be wary of door-to-door salespeople offering TV conversion equipment.

Door-to-DoorCommunications Minister Senator Stephen Conroy is warning people to be wary of door-to-door salespeople offering conversion equipment and falsely claiming to represent the Government.

The fake sales reps are believed to be hawking in the Mildura/Sunraysia region, the first area to be facing a switch from analogue to digital.

“I was outraged to hear reports about people claiming to represent the Government and offering digital television goods door-to-door. These people have no relationship with the Government and should be reported immediately,” he said.

“Anyone who becomes aware of this activity should immediately contact the Government’s Digital Switchover Taskforce by calling 1800 20 10 13 or visiting the www.digitalready.gov.au web site.”

“Make no mistake, any unscrupulous activity that is brought to the Government’s attention will be reported to Consumer Affairs.

“Set-top-boxes are available in supermarkets and electronics retailers to suit a range of budgets and I urge people to find a product that meets their needs and helps them enjoy the benefits of digital television.”

Assistance will be provided to eligible disadvantaged including elderly, people with disabilities and their carers to make the switch to digital television.

  1. My mum buys things from door-to-door salespeople because she is a recent widow and does not know how to say no to pushy people. She is a prime target for these operators.

I feel sorry for good organisations like the Red Cross that still have to use this method to collect funds. They probably get yelled at occasionally.

  2. Who honestly buys anything from door-to-door salesmen? They’re in the same category as telemarketers for me, basically I don’t care how ‘good’ their deal is, I’m not buying or signing up to anything from one of them because they really don’t have good deals, and also, I prefer to go out there and find my own deals. I don’t need, nor do I want, to be forced into buying something that I’m not interested in.

  3. Exactly Steve (by which I mean the TV Tonight poster). The public needs to be warned about sniveling little liars hiding in our internet, begging us all the “please think of the children” as they secretly go about their their real agenda of censoring Legal (aka “prohibited”) content from the eyes of the Australian public.

  4. @steve, thats the problem with stephen conroy, due to his ridiculous plan to censor the internet, no one can take anything he says seriously, as he has proved he has no idea, even if what he is saying at the time does make sense.
