Idol: Sony signs Warner

'Rock chick' Hayley Warner again shows winning Idol isn't everything, after being signed to Sony Music.

vlcsnap-16300Australian Idol runner-up Hayley Warner has been signed to Sony Music following the show’s grand final last weekend.

The 17 year old ‘rock chick’ will release “Good Day” as her first single, the song she revealed at Idol’s penultimate episode.

“I just want to hit while the iron is hot,” she told the Sunday Telegraph.

CEO Denis Handlin said, “Hayley has great enthusiasm and energy and brings a unique performance style that the public have really responded to. We look forward to working with her on her first album which will be released in 2010.”

Idol runner ups have often fared better than those they were beaten by with Anthony Callea, Shannon Noll and Jessica Mauboy all second-place getters in the reality contest, but forging lasting careers. Others including Lisa Mitchell, Ricki Lee Coulter, Bobby Flynn, Paulini Curuenavuli, Rob Mills, Dan O’Connor and Carl Riseley have also had careers in the biz.

2007 Idol runner up Matt Corby is a finalist in the first Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition, with the winner to be announced on Tuesday.

  1. No David, by putting in just about every non winner who has had a slight bit of success, and saying runners up are often more successful than winners and have long careers you are dismissing all winners. My God, some of the ones you included as having forged lasting careers really had me scratching my head in dismay.

    Bobby Flynn – never charted
Paulini Curuenavuli – First album gold, 2nd album released in 2006 debuted in the 70’s and spent 2 weeks in the top 100.
Rob Mills – dropped by Sony after having a moderate hit single and an album that spent a few weeks in the charts and failed to gain accreditation. Spent time hosting a very bad late night quiz tv show until he got a break to appear in Wicked.
    Dan O’Connor – never charted
Carl Riseley – 1st album no accreditation. 2nd album spent a couple of weeks in top 50 then dropped like a stone after Mother’s Day this, one of the biggest drops in ARIA history.
And as I mentioned and you removed from my post, Anthony Callea has not released an album since 2006 (gold accredited) and was last in the singles chart in early 2007. He only has 2 platinums and one gold for albums and 6 platinums shared between two singles, both of which were released in 2005. His career highlights were mostly in the year after he was runner up on Idol.
You are twisting facts to tell a good story and to keep the myth going that no winner wins from winning idol. At least one did, and did very well indeed.

@CrAig. Shannons 1st single was #2 in Ireland, not his album. It spend 6 months in their chart (the same amount of time Guy’s first single spent in the NZ top 40) but failed to gain any sales accreditation.

    1. Peter: your enthusiasm for Guy (an artist whose albums are somewhere in my collection) got in the way of the sentence. The original sentence states two points: Idol runners up have sometimes fared better than those who won; secondly Callea, Noll and Mauboy have all forged careers. It does not state Noll outsold Sebastian anymore than it does not say Mauboy outsold Leith. I also referred to career not chart sales. They are two different things. Success in music theatre, cabaret circuit and criss-crossing this country as a working performer means something to me. I have again edited your lengthy response without negating your point, and again ask you to keep comments succinct. Your point is made, mate.

  2. @ Adam, you go seriously burnt on here re your Anthony Callea comment, haha

and @ Peter… seriously chill mate. I don’t think David even started to dismiss Guy Sebastian. But just re international success, I think Shannon Noll’s What About Me had considerable success in Ireland… which I’m pretty sure is a foreign country?
It spent like a year or something ridiculous in the Top 50 over there. I was living there when it charted, and it was all the little leprechauns could talk about every time they realised I was Aussie.

  3. “Idol runner ups have often fared better than those they were beaten by with Anthony Callea, Shannon Noll and Jessica Mauboy all second-place getters in the reality contest, but forging lasting careers.” Wow David that sentence would be more accurate if you at least gave some credit to a very successful idol winner. Why make it sound like no idol winner has had a successful career. Guy Sebastian is doing ok.

Guy Sebastian: Total Australian Accreditations – 18 platinums (10 for albums, 8 for singles). 3 golds(1 for an album, 2 for singles). Last 2 singles currently #15 and #21 on the ARIA charts. The one at #21 right now spent two weeks at #1, was in the top 10 for 12 weeks and has been in the charts for 16. It has already sold around 160,000 copies(well and truly double platinum). Last album gold, still in the charts. Previous album double platinum and named 3rd highest selling album at 2008 ARIA Awards.

Shannon Noll: Total Accreditations – 17 platinums (9 for albums, 8 for singles). 2 golds for singles. Last two charting singles, #26 and #52 on the ARIA charts. Last album, failed to gain accreditation. Making money doing pub and club tours.

I reckon the first winner scrubs up pretty well amongst all those second place getters. Nothing like dismissing the only idol to get #1 outside Australia, not in one country but 5. The only idol to gain platinum accreditations outside of Australia, three in NZ. The idol with the most #1 singles for any Australian male singer in ARIA history. Four. The latest as stated only a couple of months ago. A single which is likely to be the highest selling single on the ARIA Australian Artists End of Year chart this year. There is one winner doing mighty fine indeed. Forging a successful career? My bloody oath he is. Ask John Mayer and Jordin Sparks. They are on his latest album.

    1. Haven’t dismissed Guy Sebastian at all, and there’s plenty of posts defending him through this site. My point is there are plenty of second place getters who have proven that Idol can still give them a career. Please try to keep comments succinct as per Comments Policy, thanks.

  4. Yay this is such fantastic news for Hayley, good one Sony, she was my favourite contestant from the start, she has great stage presence. Her single will go really well on radio can’t wait for its release. I wish you all the best Hayley we don’t have anyone quite like you in Oz and hope your career is as long and as fruitful as Shannon’s, Anthony’s and Jessica’s your fellow runners up.

@sgt. senor They were just correcting Adams statement, obviously comments don’t show until approved, but shows what great support he has out there.

  5. Anthony callea is just one great arist too came out of australian idol and i am so great to have met him so many times we love you anthony and cant wait for your album god bless u honey ur #1 fan norma u rock anthony cheers xo

  6. I agree with Neon Kitten for once. Sony had every intention of releasing that song, because it suits her so well, is very radio friendly, and they knew Stan was going to win.

  7. @Adam:
Anthony Callea’s actually had a pretty successful career. He’s focusing on stage shows more than releasing music at the moment, which I’m guessing he’s found to be his true calling.

  8. To @Adam.

Anthony is about to release his third album through Sony Music early 2010′. He has been writing and recording the last 12months as most artists take time to do, prior to that he spent 18 months doing theatre in the smash hit Broadway Musical production Wicked in Melbourne, also starring in Rent in Perth and the dramatic opera Dead Man Walking in Sydney. He toured with Celine Dion, Westlife, did several shows at the Opera House last year with Kate Cebrano and has just been announced as the special guest support for Whitney Houston 2010 tour……..Success doesn’t all come hearing songs on Commercial Radio!

Good luck to Hayley I’m sure she will do well.

  9. Good luck to Ms Warner.

    Shannon Jess and Anthony definitely have forged great careers post Idol, and not just recording, all three have branched out into other areas as well;

Shannon’s had a run in ‘War Of The Worlds’ in the UK , Jess is in a soon to be released movie, and Anthony spent much of 2007 and 2008 in musicals, including Rent and Wicked….I hear he is the support act for Whitney Huston’s Australian tour.

  10. Ha Ha Good one David. It is a bit hard to write, record and promote a new album when you are starring in the biggest musical to ever hit Australia 6 days a week. Rest assured Adam there is a new album out in 2010 and in the meantime, you can hear an amazing rendition of Oh Holy Night on the new CD Stars of Christmas

  11. Yay, I’m glad she got signed and I do think that song is awesome; I liked it better than Stan’s. I hope she does well because I think she deserves it; we don’t have anyone like her in Australian Music. I hope the idol tag doesn’t ruin her like the myriad of Young Divas 😉

  12. Cashing in 😆 well, that’s what it’s all about!

Anthony Callea is the finest singer from idol, he was never in the bottom 3 (the only one never to be there) and he still holds the record for fastest & highest selling CD!
Anths new album #3 will be released 2010 – he is again singing at Carols by candlelight (this years ambassador, once again) also singing at Waverly carols!

  13. Shannon Noll hasn’t fared better than the “guy” he was beaten by. According to Wikipedia, Guy Sebastian has had four No. 1 singles, including one six years after Idol, whilst Shannon Noll hasn’t had a significantly successful single for ages.

  14. Adam

Anthony Callea’s 3rd album will be released early in 2010.

He has been busy over the last 3 years, taking his music in different directions for which he has received very positive critical acclaim.

  15. Most of the voters will be paying off their mobile phone bills before they can even consider affording to buy the single. Good Day’s a good song though – should do well. As for the album…hmmmmm

  16. Anthony Callea, Shannon Noll and Jessica Mauboy all second-place getters in the reality contest, but forging lasting careers

ummm Anthony Callea hasnt had a lasting career when was the last time you heard one of his songs?
