Tom Steinfort to head to ACA

Next year more of the nation will be seeing Tom Steinfort as he switches from Nine News to A Current Affair.

tomstNine News reporter Tom Steinfort will soon be capping off a big 12 months by taking up a new role with A Current Affair.

Earlier this year the Melbourne reported was one of many journos covering the Black Saturday bushfires. But at just 24 years old he won the Young Journalist of the Year award from the Melbourne Press Club’s Quill Awards. Rewarded with a US trip he found himself on the frontline of the biggest news story in the world when  news of Michael Jackson’s death broke.

Extending his stay, Steinfort was quickly filing stories from UCLA Hospital and the Staples Memorial Centre, with reports beamed around the country on Nine’s various shows.

Soon he turns his attention to current affairs.

“I’m really looking forward to trying something new at ACA,” he told TV Tonight. “The stories there give a bit more freedom for creativity and involvement, which will be good.

“I’ve been in News at Nine for three years now, and will miss covering breaking news. But these days, ACA is at all the big stories anyway, and this will just give me a chance to cover them in a bit of a different, and more in-depth, manner.”

To take up the new role Steinfort will also have to relocate to Sydney.

“I’m a Melbourne boy and will miss home a bit, but then again I’ve been that busy travelling around for work this year anyway that it doesn’t really matter where I’m based!”

He starts his new position on January 18th.

And the fact that he won an award for journalism is proof that this will be something entirely new for him.

Current affairs and ACA – I dont see the connection?

  4. A backward step I would say Tom, in News you would have the opportunity to cover big stories and newsreading whereas at ACA you’ll be stuck reporting on neighbourhood disputes, dodgey builders and the next wonder bra.
