GTV9 begins site sell-off

Developer Lend Lease has conditionally agreed to buy a parcel of land in Richmond currently occupied by Channel 9.

Developer Lend Lease has conditionally agreed to buy a parcel of land in Richmond currently occupied by Channel 9, according to ninemsn.

It planned to buy the three hectares from General Television Corporation Pty Ltd.

Nine is scheduled to vacate the site within the next 12 months, Lend Lease said in a statement, but did not disclose the price.

Vivas Lend Lease, Lend Lease’s apartment business, is planning a residential development on the site worth around $400 million, it said.

Nine had previously looked at selling its entire Richmond premises but in June 2008 withdrew the property from sale following the global credit crunch. TV Tonight reported last October that the site was rumoured to be back on the market.

The heritage-protected building was constructed in 1908 as part of the Wertheim Piano Factory.

  1. The Brisbane commercials, are probably waiting for a new law to pass (the new City Of Brisbane Act), which will dictate, that if they move from Mt Coot-tha (or use their land for uses other than television), Brisbane City Council can step in, and buy their land.

I really hope, that any condition of development, of GTV is that Studio 9 remains intact. Studio 9 has that much history, surely there will be a big variety special (Bert and Daryl?) to send it off.

  2. what a shame. lucky I got to see some Australian TV first hand in that icon. Hey Hey It’s Saturday, the Price is Right, Temptation, Family Feud, Micallef Tonight. They better not chuck out all their archives like they did way back when Bob Phillips worked there and salvaged his collection from their dumpster.
