When ‘Exclusives’ come full Circle

Despite a few teething problems, The Circle girls had a good rapport on Day 1. But their 'Exclusive' with Eva Mendes had already aired on The Morning Show on Seven.

TEN’s new morning show The Circle premiered this morning on TEN, and the girls on the show had a good on-air rapport.

Sitting on a couch, as opposed to The View‘s table, Denise Drysdale, Yumi Stynes, Chrissie Swan and Gorgi Coghlan bantered and laughed their way through two hours of interviews, songs, cooking and advertorials. Drysdale’s down-to-earth humour is a welcome return to the genre and Coghlan was particularly assured.

No doubt a few teething problems between presenters, cameras and vision switchers will be ironed out, along with knowing whether the show is on or off air. Ooops. The cramped audience shots did little to add to the live feel other than remind us how uncomfortable it looks.

Former Catch-Up showbiz presenter Pete Timbs delivered a few entertainment lines (read from notes too awkwardly below his eyeline) while former Temptation host Ed Phillips made an appearance hosting advertorials. Drysdale noted he would also be presenting some stories for the show.

But of most interest on Day #1 was a filmed interview between Australian reporter Samantha Brett and US star Eva Mendes.

The Eva Mendes segment was couched as an ‘Exclusive’ by The Circle -yet it had already appeared on rival programme The Morning Show last June. In morning television it is not uncommon to “buy-in” celebrity interviews that can be packaged with file footage if the subject is interesting enough.

A spokesperson from TEN told TV Tonight: “We were advised by freelance reporter Samantha Brett, that her interview with Eva Mendes was supplied exclusively to Network TEN for use on The Circle and we agreed to broadcast it in good faith. Unfortunately we have since uncovered that small snippets of this interview were previously aired on another network.”

Updated: Much of the interview was also published by the Sydney Morning Herald last April.

Not exactly the news you want to learn after you’ve just kicked off your new show…

The Circle continues at 10am weekdays on TEN.

  1. I love it and will watch it in the future. There is some teething problems but in time will improve. The audience look very squash together. Today was very funny.
As carer I need to laugh in the morning. They should have 9am to 11.30 then news.

  2. I totally agree that there should be discussions on current events/news. I’m a stay at home Mum, and I like the View because they have intelligent discussions on a wide range of topics, including current affairs and politics, (although they sometimes get out of hand).
Hopefully The Circle will get the mix right given time. I love Denise and Chrissie, Gorgi was good. I really like Yumi on Max, but she seemed uncomfortable and a bit bored yesterday.
I’m prepared to give it time to find it’s feet. FIngers crossed.

  3. Chrissie is the only oen who’s natural and interesting to watch. When she was up in Brisbane her breakfast radio show was actually very entertaining and she seems to have brought the same energy.

We all know this is a knock off of the View but they don’t have a natural chemistry with eachother and it’s so wooden plus Yumi needs some of her V hosting energy because they all act so bored, tired and uncharismatic. That is except for Chrissie.

  4. Denise looked really tired with huge bags under her eyes. Why couldn’t they choose hosts that are intelligent . I give it a month until the naggy nasty Denise shows her true colours.

  5. I watched it and thought it was laugh out loud in parts. There were too many advertorials but thats what pays for the show I guess. Although I did watch the dominoes advertorial and it was interesting and funny, especially at the end. There was also too much cooking as if they realised they 30mins to kill so threw some cooking segments in. I’d really like to see more topical discussion on things like the days newspapers or “hot topics” So far its a bit insulting to make out that anyone at home during the day is only interested in gossip mags and cooking, I counted 40 studio audience members all crammed into what looked like economy class on a low budget airline. I’ve set my pvr for daily recording.

  6. I thought it was a pretty good first show, I agree Denise was excellent, Gorgi is a confident well chosen host, I really like Chrissie (especially her honest opinions) and I think Yumi will quickly find her feet. I’ll watch again. 🙂

  7. actually really good. best thing on morning tv and was surprised that it wasn’t a direct copy of ‘the view’.

banter was natural, particularly for day 1. some laugh out moments… for people that say women aren’t funny, they’re certainly challenged in this show.

will have longevity and will be good to mix up the hosts with denise doing 2 days next month. well done.

  8. @Jamie, The Catch-up lasted 79 days (or 3 & 1/2 months in other terms)

Still not a fan, but I’ll try to put up with it for the week. News at 9am is strange.

  9. I recorded the show today & watched it back tonight!
Fantastic to have the wonderful & funny Denise Drysdale, loved Chrissie Swan – so natural. Gorgi Coghlan was ok, I didnt really warm to Yumi Stynes though – she seemed a bit out of place & bored at times. Im sure she’ll relax & loosen up in time as the show takes shape.
A great start – will be watching with interest!

  10. Hi there, I thought the show was great. I think that in time the hosts will definitely have better banter and be a little more interesting, but in general I think it’s going to be long-lasting. Thank god for that. We need something new.

  11. The four girls were great for a first show,Denise was the stand out with her down to earth humour .l think withour her the show will not be as good, when she starts doing only 2 shows a week..Of course pretty much same format as all morning shows the dreadful advertorials, the cooking segments etc.But l will continue watching(well taping it and watching after work)mainly because of Denise love her, shes a true tv legend.Gorgi was very impressive too,a great host

  12. It all seemed so fake to me and lacked the genuine personalities(Denise is an exception) that make The View so entertaining.

I’m hoping it gets axed before very long so we can see a return to a 9am type morning show.

  13. Samantha Brett should stick to writing Carrie Underwood-lite stories for SMH.com

How To Know When He’s Cheating
    Office Romances: Can They Work?
Shoes Or Jewelry Or Credit Card, Where Does All Your Money Go?

  14. What a Great insightful interesting show!! I was so surprised because I had no idea who the hosts would be (I had never heard of them before), but seriously was impressed with the hosts, the lineup, the info and all the stuff in the show. The segments were great and really interesting. I am a stay-at-home mum and live for the morning TV – I now can watch this Channel Ten – finally.
Good Job. PS – Pete Timbs is Great.. glad he is back on the telly!

  15. I thoroughly enjoyed it! The advertorials which had been pre-recorded were a chance to go do other quick jobs like put out the washing or organise the day, but the advertorials done with the girls were actually more tolerable than I expected. I’ve already booked to be in the studio audience on Thursday and can’t wait! The four girls gel so perfectly, So much better than David & Kim!
