7PM Project to hire News Editor

Executive Producer Craig Campbell says the hiring of a senior journalist will add clout to the news content of The 7PM Project.

The 7PM Project is on the hunt for a News Editor to add to the show’s editorial content.

Until now the show has shared resources with TEN News but Executive Producer Craig Campbell tells TV Tonight he is delighted to be adding a senior journalist to the team.

“It’s always been the plan but we’ve never found the right person. It’s kind of been done ad hoc for a while, but as I get the show more and more established I want someone who can go ‘OK in this story who’s the hero, who’s the villain, where are we at?'” he said.

“At 7:00 it’s becoming very apparent that people are coming to us as a news service. So we’re stepping up.

“I want to make sure we have someone with real news clout in our room and our sphere to guide our News bulletin. Because let’s face it, news is the spine of the show.”

An advertisement in yesterday’s Australian indicates the role would suit ‘an individual who has worked on a similar role in a newsroom as a Chief of Staff or News Editor or Snr. Journalist.’

Campbell says the position will also open up opportunities to break news stories too.

“It’s a great positive step for the show and yet again another endorsement from TEN, giving us the thumbs up that we’re here for a while,” he said.

“I couldn’t be happier with TEN saying ‘Let’s get you them one of those!”

  1. Get rid of Roving Enterprises, Carrie, Dave Hughes and bring in some more intelligent faces and you would have an excellent show. But let’s face it, it’s still not going to rate. Ten needs to decide which is more important, a quality show with a handful of loyal viewers or spending the money needed for that on something more worthwhile.

  2. This show is total proof that Ratings are just an excuse to mistreat good shows … this should have been dumped months ago and, if it was not a cheap and easy inhouse production, it would have been …
Right from the start, the biggest problem has been Dave Hughes who is just a waste of space, and very unattractive to boot, can’t stand to look at him or hear his winey voice!!! That is just a simple fact from the viewrers’ point of view!
News Editor??? pointless … repeats of repeats would still be more popular …
And, as I see above, it is a Roving Enterprises Production … so that excplains why it is not very funny!
    Jack!

  3. Because let’s face it, news is the spine of the show
Failed attempts at humour by interviewers who think they are more important than the news is the problem. Ego is the spine of the show.

  4. ““At 7:00 it’s becoming very apparent that people are coming to us as a news service. So we’re stepping up.””

Sorry no. If I wanted to watch the news I would watch ABC. I watch 7pm Project as there’s nothing else I like to watch at that time and sometimes they have good guest stars.

I still think the show needs some more work and sounds like a small thing but it would buy them some more time. Shorten the opening. We don’t need all the sweeping images of the logo and a shot of the table.

  5. I’ve warmed to the show over time. I can’t help but think though that this move will muddy the waters over just what format the show is aiming for – a serious news program or light hearted look at current affairs. For mine I like there to be a clear distinction between the two. If I’m in the mood for serious news I’ll watch the ABC news bulletin, but if I just feel like kicking back and being entertained I’ll watch the 7pm Project. I don’t think the two styles would mix well.

  6. “At 7:00 it’s becoming very apparent that people are coming to us as a news service.” Firstly, isn’t that what the show was set up to be? And secondly, is it really “very apparent”?

@paxir Being a chef is hard work too, but if the food is mediocre you tell them about it or find somewhere else to eat.

  7. The 7PM Project does not bring down ratings for the Biggest Loser. The fact that Loser is on at 7.30 against tougher competition and different conpetition on every night is what affects its ratings.

The 7PM Project, it does very well in the 16-39 and 18-49 demos – exactly what it is aimed at. In 16-39, 7PM sometimes wins over Home and Away and isn’t far behind 2.5 Men.

  8. Oh My Goodness

They have already killed The Biggest Loser by moving it to 7.30pm (Ratings are lower then last year)

Does Ten really want to kill their Golden Egg as well? (MasterChef)

  9. I was interested last night re the “nanny state” interview where they cut the interviewee short and then proceeded to be critical of the guy. Surely if you are going to do that you at least have the decency to say it to the guy while he is still there to defend himself. It reminded me of the old talkback announcer trick of turning the volume of the caller down and talking over them so as they haven’t got a chance to reply and state their point of view.

  10. Perhaps Paxir could practice what he preaches? He’s entitled to his opinion but some-one who has a different opinion is an “arrogant tool”. That seems arrogant to me.

  11. good lord, commenters on this site can be such arrogant tools sometimes.

7PM isnt perfect but we’re all a lot better off having a program like it on air. It’s smart, its funny. I wasnt the wildest fan of bickmore on rove but here she pushes this program along well. Pickering is one of the funniest guys on tv. he’s incredibly fast, well-informed and – live tv is incredibly hard. crazy hard. particularly when you’ve only got 30minutes to punch through a lot of conent & make it pop. And it’s daily — good lord.

7PM has got to be one of the hardest shows in the country to make and even harder make well. And can we not just take a moment to give ch10 props for Trying something new instead of feeding us a repleat of another sitcom. christ. there’s always So much whinging on this site about how crap programming is on australian tv — but the moment any network tries something new and untested you get all grumpy like an old person who’s seen coloured folk for the first time.

I beleive the audience will grow over time. I think TEN should keep the late night repeat because that’s where a lot of younger people in their 20’s are most likely to catch it.

but for the love of god, just pull your heads in. most of you have no idea what you’re talking about. and for what it’s worth — no — i dont work on 7PM or Roving but i do work in tv. *shuffles off soapbox*

  12. They certainly need something after the John Travolta interview debacle, and the horrific ‘nanny state’ interview last night.

Some media training for the hosts might help 😉

  13. They need to find a stronger female panelist too. The current one is so infuriating I would rather watch Home & Away than 7pm, now that’s saying something, I feel smarter watching H & A than watching 7pm.

  14. May this be seen as an attempt to hold onto its 7pm slot?
Regardless of whether they may have intended to have a news editor for some time,
I can’t help but feel its something only most relevant to the primetime news times

  15. They need to hire someone with interviewing skills as well, the guy that was cut off by silly old Negus last night that they then went on to say went completely off topic of the question asked was one of the the worst pieces I’ve ever seen.

  16. The show is meant to be light enteratinment & news, yes? For me the sole problem of the show is the hosts, all of them.Charlie Pickering has a massive chip on his shoulder & needs a shave,he looks ridiculous.Carrie would look more comfortable with a glass of chardonnay & probably more relaxed & then there’s Dave Hughes.Removing him would be the first step to improving the show.Totally unappealing, all of them.
And for the umpteenth time, can they all drop the pens? This is highly distracting & just shows that they are all uncomfortable with what they are doing.
Yes i guess things could be worse,Mickey Robbins could be hosting.
I am very suprised the show has lasted so long.

  17. They should have done this at the very beginning. Establishing a news show without a news director was an insane move.
Its like being told you have cancer and then 1 year later deciding it might be a good idea to check yourself in for medical treatment.
    Better late than never.
