Katherine Heigl (officially) quits Grey’s Anatomy

“I know I’m disappointing the fans,” says Katherine Heigl. “I just had to make a choice. I hope I made the right one.”

And it feels like it’s about time too.

Katherine Heigl has finally, officially, unequivocally, truly ruly quit Grey’s Anatomy.

Her final episode aired on January 21st in the US, with her exit not sorted with producers until recently.

“I am done,” Heigl told EW.com. “We just finalised our agreement. Everyone had been working really hard to find an amicable and gracious way of letting go and moving on. It’s sad but it’s what I wanted.”

The 31-year-old actress reveals that it was family issues, not her film career, that prompted her to approach creator Shonda Rhimes and ask to be let out of her contract 18 months early.

“I started a family and it changed everything for me,” says Heigl, who took a three-month family leave from Grey’s this season to bond with her newly-adopted daughter. “It changed my desire to work full-time.

“I know I’m disappointing the fans,” she says. “I just had to make a choice. I hope I made the right one.”

ABC Studios issued the following statement: “By mutual agreement, Katherine Heigl has ended her successful run as Dr. Isobel Stevens. The studio wishes her well. Everyone at Grey’s Anatomy is now focused on delivering a shocking season finale and a great show for seasons to come.”

Heigl’s final episode airs in Australia next Tuesday.

  1. While Izzy has annoyed me for this season, post almost-death… I really would have liked for her story to be tied up somehow. . Just to hear no more about her after being such a big character for so long is a bit of a shame….

  2. Rather than killing her off, as she is not coming back to film any more scenes, they should just send Alex divorce papers and write her out in that fashion.

  3. I think the show will be better for it, she always came out saying she didn’t want to be there, which no doubt would’ve created some negative vibes for everyone else.

It sh*ts me though, I mean, this show really put her on the map and as soon as her movie career took off she just couldnt wait to leave – when really, she kind of owes them everything.

Not me :), have found the Izzie character irritating over the last couple of seasons. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, ideally i would have preferred if George lived (although would have had to have been played by a different actor). However they should have had the double whammy – both Izzie and George not surviving beyond the season finale.
