Airdate: The Street

Timothy Spall, Jim Broadbent, Jane Horrocks, Bob Hoskins and Sue Johnston star in this highly-awarded drama coming to ABC2.

Highly-awarded UK drama The Street begins next week on ABC2.

The programme follows the lives of various residents of one street in Manchester and is led by an impressive cast including, including Timothy Spall, Jim Broadbent, Jane Horrocks, Bob Hoskins, David Thewlis and Sue Johnston.

Across its three series it won both a BAFTA for Best Drama Series and an RTS Television Award for Drama Series twice. It also won two International Emmy Awards and a nomination from the prestigious Rose d’Or Festival.

The Street is a star-studded new drama from award winning writer Jimmy McGovern (Cracker, Priest), featuring moving and witty stories of friendship, family, love and betrayal.

Each episode concentrates on a different house in the street, and while each story is self-contained, all six are linked by a sense of community and shared experience.

The extraordinary stories about ordinary people are brought to life by a high profile cast led by Jane Horrocks (Little Voice, Absolutely Fabulous), Academy Award winner Jim Broadbent (Chronicles Of Narnia, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Vera Drake), Timothy Spall (Secrets and Lies, Harry Potter, Vanilla Sky), David Schofield (Gladiator, From Hell, Band of Gold) and Sue Johnston (The Royle Family, My Uncle Silas).

Every door in The Street hides a story, and the relationships and emotions are those that everyone can understand. In the opening episode Angela Quinn (Jane Horrocks), a bored wife and mother, embarks on a fun and passionate affair with a married neighbour. Then her world is turned upside down by dramatic events that see her lover become her arch enemy.

There are mothers and daughters; fathers and sons; a wife and her lover; a husband and wife falling in love all over again 40 years on; an unexpected friendship that turns the life of an ordinary taxi driver upside down; and two battling sisters, drawn back together by the breakdown of a marriage.

Above all, The Street is about love. Love stories as unexpected, messy and exuberant as real life itself.

It airs 8:30pm Tuesday April 27th on ABC2.

  1. I watched Series 1 & 2 whilst living in England. I was totally addicted to this show. Each episode centres on a different house and takes you into differing lives and storylines. Some of the stories cross over but there are separate threads that go on. It is not at all like Coronation Street, which is a soap. This show has high quality writing, acting and productin from the BBC. I will be watching this all over again. I’m very much looking forward to it. Good on the ABC for finally offering it. Though they did take their time.

  2. I saw this on showcase too and paid extra for the subscription. Every story is like a movie, Its very hard going as each one is so depressing. I think its one of the best UK drama series since TV began. I hope ABC2 shows series 3 as i don’t recall seeing it on showcase and don’t want to pay extra for it now.
