Robbie Kmetoni dares to dance

Dancer winner Robbie Kmetoni tells TV Tonight how he endured school bullies because of his love for dance. But years of training have paid off.

18 year old Robbie Kmetoni has worked hard to win So You Think You Can Dance Australia, pursuing a dream which saw him being bullied at primary school.

The diminutive performer was the only boy amongst his friends who was interested in dancing and there were times he thought of giving up.

“There were moments when I thought I should give up and go back to soccer. When I was 5 years old I was a soccer freak, and my dad was my coach,” he told TV Tonight.

But family and determination got him through. His Czechoslavakian father, Italian mother and extended family have been his biggest fans.

“My family were my biggest supporters. Both sides of the family. They were fully into it, with banners and posters. There was 50 of them every week at the show!

“I’m really lucky to say I had an amazingly supportive family,” he said.

“It’s always been like that but this show has increased it.”

Kmetoni says the punishing schedules of rehearsal, performing and publicity for Dance wasn’t easy.

“We were like robots towards the end. We just knew what we had to do every morning, every day. And we did it without fussing, no matter how sore or tired we were. We knew that we had to do that because the show must go on.

“Reality TV sucks so much life out of you, and so much spirit as well.”

Although he speaks well of his experience in Reality TV, he noted that some of the other contestants found some trouble adjusting from being on screen to life beyond the show.

“When the Top 20 came back they spoke to us about how empty they felt, and didn’t know what they wanted to do with their life anymore, until they actually came back into the competition,” he says.

“That’s what’s so great about this show. It just pushes you to the maximum. You feel like dropping dead but you know how hard you worked, so that at the end of the day, you know it’s what you want to do.

But he also acknowledges producers and crew treated the cast “like royalty.”

Kmetoni won $200,000 and will tour Burn The Floor in the US including Las Vegas, New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

  1. sorry, I meant the very first winner who’s also a guy, his name escapes me. the last thing i’ve read was he had an audition in the US, i wonder if he’s in any Broadway musicals there now?

  2. David, thanks for sharing what Robbie chose to do out of the three choices he was given by SYTYCDA. Robbie couldn’t knock back going to the US!! I would if I could dance 🙂

I was pleased with the shows viewer numbers considering it was up against Pacific and Hey Hey!
