Rumour: New Seven drama

Seven is casting for a new dramedy that focusses on 4 women in their early 30s who meet up at a school reunion.

Seven is believed to be ramping up its local drama slate with a new series in the pipeline.

TV Tonight hears the network is casting for a new dramedy that focusses on 4 women in their early 30s with the title Winners & Losers.

The series begins with a group of girls meeting up at a school reunion, where they learn each others’ fortunes have changed. A one-time school bully is now unsuccessful in life, while another has reinvented themselves to become the CEO of a company.

The Melbourne-based series is to begin under director Nick Buffalo with a pilot to be shot in May. Seven is understood to be eyeing a 9:30 or 8:30 timeslot for the show.

Some years ago TEN decided not to proceed with the female-driven series Secretary while Seven had a relatively brief run with the male-dominated Last Man Standing. A reunion was also the inciting factor for Out of the Blue, shot for the UK and aired on TEN.

  1. As you say David, it is up to the Network to release this information, but I can say that the description of both of the female characters is inaccurate to the extent that the bully has been quite successful in life and is anyway a secondary character, not one of the main four women, and no one has reinvented themselves to be a CEO. The four women are also in their late twenties, rather than early thirties. This seems a minor difference, but isn’t really, as that clocking over the big 3 0 can made a huge difference in the attitudes of women (indeed men too). It’s not my place to say any more, but I don’t think anyone is going to be peeved with me for taking it upon myself to mention the things that I know to not be so. Once again, thanks for your excellent championing of Aussie drama and your balanced editorialising.

  2. Bravo! Good on you for your comment David. It’s interesting how many posters on here are being negative about the potential quality of this series on the slightest of information. Information which is, by the way, wrong in a number of details. I have connections to this project and can assure that not only are a number of this things in the article incorrect, but also that the piece bears only the most superficial resemblance, if any, to the other dramas mentioned in the article. Obviously your source cobbled their info together from hearsay, getting some things right and others quite wrong. Back to the negativity of some of the posters – it seems to me that the time to make the subjective judgement that a series is crap is when the final credits roll on the premier episode. Prior to that, any strong value judgement seems to say a lot more about the judger than the judged.

    1. Hence the word “Rumour” on the headline, Adam! Happy to run more clarified info if you want to get in touch, but as we both know networks like to keep this stuff close to their chest. Last year the site leaked similar early talk on Cops LAC, which is now going into production.

Pilot stage, clearly a lot can change.

  3. Oh but David… what have the FTA’s done for us that deserves such blind faith in a new production????

All we seem to get on FTA is cliche driven drivel – whether it be cop, hospital or family (yes – that includes Rafters, the biggest cliche factory in town).

I really hope this show can work…but it has to be something special and very different to what any network has produced lately for me to become a viewer.

    1. Benji… not blind faith… benefit of the doubt.

I’ve previously logged many times how police / legal / medical form the bulk of non-soap drama in the western world because of story generation and economic practicalities. US cable has forged away from this trend to great effect but remember that commercial FTA is always going to be aiming broad.

  4. As long as Ch7 use quality scripts, actors & directors as with PTTR, then IMHO it should work.
I’m in agreement with others here that we don’t need another cop show so please no nurse or cop characters.

    1. While it’s one thing to have a reaction to early news, it’s a bit early to be presuming so much guys.

A little more support for Aussie drama wouldn’t go astray.

Premise is one thing (only some of which is noted here). Execution is everything. Kudos to Seven for taking a risk with a new project. Pleased to see not everyone is so quick to judge.

  5. Sappy dramedy show

    a) will flop because it will all be based on a life-changing event… these types of shows fail unless they have lead-ins, Hank, Accidentely on Purpose, Sons of Tuscon, the forgotten etc have all failed.

    b) the best shows have ensemble casts or something near ensemble, and One of the ensemble makes a life-changing decision, ER, Cheers, How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men and The OC are examples

    c) I’m going to presume it’s not going to have nudity, violence or swearing, so why put it on so late, put it on at 7:30, and let shows like Criminal Minds and city Homicide, which have violence and such go at 8:30 and 9:30, parental groups probably wouldn’t bitch on about it either, because from my perspective, this looks like 7th Heaven, for 40 year old women.

  6. The concept sounds like it’d work better as a straight out comedy. But I suppose that’s already been done with Romy & Michelle’s Highschool Reunion.

  7. @Ronnie…… what has this concept got to do with Channel Nine? And with Nine having a groundbreaking drama like Underbelly on their screens, surely we could have done without your quick Nine-bash. let both channels make good television i say

  8. All Saints got axed and this is a possible replacement. No, just no. I like supporting Australian drama but only when it sounds half way decent. Just judging from that meagre description it sounds riddled with cliches and probably tinged with a bit of Sex and the City. My worst nightmare.

To all those bemoaning Australian cop shows, out of all the genres they succeed most because they have broad appeal, therefore they make money.

  9. Seven are confident enough to try something a little different, while Nine moves forward with Blue Heelers by the sea, cast with ex Home and Away actors.

  10. Finally, something which isn’t a police or crime procedural. Sounds like a decent premise, though I think casting will be the key to this shows success if it is picked up for a series.
