  1. @Peter – Channel 9 was planning to screen the Good Friday game live in Melbourne but was requested by Melbourne Storm’s owners – News Ltd, not to show the game live so it would not take people away from the Good Friday Appeal on Channel 7 and which has a large amount of involvement from the Herald Sun, which is a News Ltd paper.

However, I do agree that GTV9 Melbourne does have an “interesting” policy when it comes to the Melbourne Storm and Rugby League in general. Lets just hope that when the anti-siphoning laws are changed, League and Union will be shown on the Multi Channels.

  2. Hey D, nearly all Melbourne Storm fans and NRL fans in general couldn’t care less about the Rugby either…….it’s another game you doofus! Different rules, different field lines, different number of players, oh and a different name. Rugby is short for Rugby Union! It’s sort of like calling your VFL something like ……Gaelic Football.

  3. It takes controversy and new stadium to see the NRL live on TV in Melbourne, good for the so called ‘expansion’ in to Melbourne.

  4. Won’t this diminish the amount of people that plan on attending the game?

Those that are 50/50 on going will probably just stay at home.

  5. It might be the new stadium and another marketing strategy to try and tell the storm fans they’re not dead yet! I think Nine is creating a record, considering some NRL games are not live in the states they play in and I know The AFL boss is one very hard sell when it comes to viewers wanting their Melbourne team vs Melbourne team or interstate team vs Melbourne team matches live. An d 7 on Sundays in Melbourne is cutting their telecast too fine and lots of ad revenue!

  6. Also next Sunday in Melb there is no free to air AFL on Ch 7 so that would give 9 and the NRL a free kick in that way. But again has a Ch 9 suit us policy when they show Melbourne fta games giving the Storm Good Friday game wasn’t shown till 11pm in Melb.

  7. The only reason they’re showing it is because it’s on the new stadium. I am curious to see what the new stadium is like so I may watch a bit of it (I couldn’t care less about the rugby by the way).

  8. With all the hysteria and publicity in Melbourne lately they’ll probably draw an audience for this game. Then nine/nrl will think they’re on to something, at which point ratings will drop to negative figures, meaning people will actually throw their tv’s away and gouge their eyes out to avoid watching.

  9. According to the advance guides the Australia v. New Zealand game is live into Melbourne on Friday Night, IIRC they did not do this last year, so do they still have it sheduled in?

  10. The match was supposed to be the celebration of Storm’s first match at the new venue (AAMI Park). But with the Storm losing the two premierships they had won as the salary cap rorts, who knows how many will turn up?
And don’t forget next Friday’s rugby league test between Australia and New Zealand, held at the same venue, will be shown live into Melbourne at 7.30pm.

  11. I can’t believe that Melbourne storm nrl matches aren’t normally played live in Melbourne when Sydney swans afl matches are played live in Sydney.

  12. Nine don’t even do that for NSW and Queensland viewers! The 3pm Sunday game is always delayed an hour and shown at 4pm (with the exception of the ANZAC Day game last month), presumably so they can shove more adverts in.

But it’s great to see that they are doing this. I bet those Storm fans (all two of them!) will appreciate it.

  13. I guess the (Nine) don’t really line Men in Trees with all the bumping and well it’s like 2 years old now and they can’t even manage a weekend afternoon slot to show first run eps. Hope the W channel continue to show it.
