Karmichael Hunt’s footy debut

ABC1 will screen former NRL star Karmichael Hunt’s Australian Rules football debut on Saturday.

ABC1 will screen former NRL star Karmichael Hunt’s Australian Rules football debut to Victorian viewers on Saturday, June 12th at 1pm on ABC1.

The VFL Coburg v Gold Coast game will also be available on iView from Monday, June 14th for 14 days.

Commentators for the game will be Peter Donegan, Ross Booth, David Rhys-Jones and Phil Cleary. Phil Cleary will interview Karmichael Hunt after the game.

ABC presenter, Peter Donegan, says “It might be a long way from a European Rugby Union Cup Final in Paris, to a VFL home and away game at Craigieburn on Melbourne’s outskirts, but for Karmichael Hunt it signals the beginning of a brand new challenge.

“In recent years, VFL appearances by Nathan Buckley and Ben Cousins have attracted widespread interest, but this match presents a whole new raft of questions.

“Can Karmichael actually kick, mark or handball? Can he run the kilometres needed to play Australian Rules footy?

“To be honest, not even he knows the answer to those questions yet. It won’t be all answered of course when Coburg takes on the Gold Coast….but it will be the very first piece of what is an intriguing puzzle. And in light of Israel Folau’s recent decision, footy fans of all persuasions will be watching.”

It airs live and exclusive Saturday, June 12th at 1pm on ABC1 and will be available on iView.

  1. This will be very interesting,i’m sure the ABC are rubbing their hands for the expected big ratings they will get. This is a gutsy and brave move by the AFL,something they probably needed to do,and knock the NRL back even further behind. As NRL are now really struggling with viewers and people going to games. They are in trouble.

  2. @Paull Yer, I think the NRL would be smart enough to pick up a 34 year old.
Lol thers a Google ad for the Brisbane Broncos, such good placement…

  3. It was a bad idea for afl to do this, they’re just asking for a war between football codes. The nrl needs to fight back, recruit barry hall for a new victorian nrl team, he’s got the reputation of an nrl footballer afterall.

  4. he will get limited game time against some not-so-quality opposition, but still would be good for non-Vics to be able to watch on free TV too
