Keeping up with Kourtney

Kourtney Kardashian tells TV Tonight she is filmed for 18 hours a day for her Reality series that it's impossible to be anything other than herself.

She’s a card-carrying member of one of television’s most popular reality families.

Kourtney Kardashian is the eldest daughter of the Kardashian / Jenner clan and has starred in four series of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Kourtney and Khloé Take Miami.

As a successor to US family-portait reality shows such as The Simple Life and The Osbournes, the Kardashian shows have seen it all: highs, lows, arguments, weddings, pregnancies, cheatings, tattoos, feuds, anger management, fashion and more…

It has made Kourtney a Reality TV favourite and as she explains to TV Tonight, the idea of starring in a series happened very fast.

“My mom had the idea and (producer) Ryan Seacrest loved it. We were filming within 30 days of our first meeting. We all kind of said if one of us was going to do it, then we were all going to do it together,” she says.

“It definitely has changed our lives. I think we went into it not knowing what it was going to be. It all happened so quickly that I don’t think we had time to think about what we were doing or what was going on. There were cameras there and they were filming…. it just went on from that.”

Kardashian had a taste of Reality with a previous series in which ‘rich kids’ were put to work on a Colorado cattle ranch.

“I had done a Reality show before called Filthy Rich: Cattle Drive which was on E! One of my best friends was going on it and she said, ‘Do you want to come with me and do this show?’ And I was like, ‘Absolutely not!’

“I somehow went, but I barely spoke, so I wasn’t really on the show. But it was such a cool experience and I became familiar with cameras the whole time I was there. So I was somewhat used to the process.

“But it was so cool doing it with our family.”

Kardashian says that despite being filmed for a Reality series, she isn’t distorting her personality as a performance for cameras.

“Because we film 18 hours a day for six to seven days a week, it’s a little bit hard to turn it on like that,” she says.

“I think because there are so many of us something is bound to happen.

“Then when we didn’t really think there was much else to tell or to see Khloe told us all she was getting married. So that whole experience went down and then I was pregnant.. So just living your natural life, because there are so many of us… it just kind of works itself out.”

Kardashian is now the proud new mother of baby Mason Dash, while managing the boutique store she owns with sister Khloe, D-A-S-H.

She believes a commitment to work is the best advice she can give to young fans watching her on television.

“One of the best things we had growing up was a strong work ethic. So staying busy and really finding something that you’re passionate about doing and going with that is my advice. We all love getting up early and having production days. I think it keeps you grounded.

“But you can’t get caught up in the nonsense. If you do go out once in a while you have to suck it up, go to work and have a life.”

Now she juggles celebrity, retail management and being a parent with boyfriend Scott Disick (who joins in the new series).

Despite being the eldest, many thought Kourtney was considered the most unlikeliest of the Kardashian sisters to embrace motherhood.

“I love it. It’s so surprising how your motherly instincts kick in. I remember the first night when I came home from the hospital, the first night that Scott and I had to change Dash’s diapers together we both didn’t really know what we were doing.

“But I don’t know, you just ‘get it’…you just get the hang of it and figure it out.”

Season Two of Kourtney and Khloé Take Miami premieres Tuesday June 22 at 9:30pm on E!
