Report: MTV to remake Inbetweeners

A US adaptation of comedy series The Inbetweeners shifts from being in development at ABC to MTV.

Having set about remaking Skins and a TV adaptation of Teen Wolf, now MTV is about to remake The Inbetweeners, according to some media reports.

Deadline Hollywood claims MTV is close to giving a pilot commitment to the project, which will retain creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley as Executive Producers alongside Aaron Kaplan from Kapital Entertainment.

It will be the second attempt at adapting it in the U.S. after ABC pursued a version written by Morris and Beesley two years ago.

A search is said to be underway for a writer to pen the adaptation. BBC America has been airing the UK original.

The UK comedy, currently airing in repeat on GO!, is to have a third season and a feature film is in development in which the four hapless schoolboys will take an overseas holiday.

Fingers crossed the US version doesn’t wind up looking like Gossip Girl.

  1. Can we stop with the “USA don’t have sophisticated humour” myth? Look at Modern Family as a sign of hope. We don’t judge all our comedies by using Hey Hey, Pizza, All Together Now, Hey Dad as benchmarks.

Cringeworthiness is a universal language that we all have to suffer. After all, where did the Benny Hill show come from? That’s right, the UK.

Good luck to the Inbetweeners. Got the Season 1 &2 dvds shipped here, and although short in episodes, its brilliant.

  2. The problem is, i see the yanks taking the over the top/exaggerated realistic language and situations, just for the shock value. Not the context.

There is an innocence to the inbetweeners despite all that.

  3. first skins, now inbetweeners. Dear USA, its not the worlds fault that any of your shows that have teens in them are horribly cliched, full of stereotypes and full of wealthy individuals.

this could never, ever be pulled off correctly lol.

  4. I don’t see the point of remaking a show with a concept as broad as this. Why don’t they just create their own comedy about the same subject?

What’s more, this will probably be even harder to full off than a decent remake of Skins, because the swearing in this show and the slagging off between the friends is a central component of the show. You can’t just dull that down and expect it to work.

  5. How would the americans go at trying to translate “she is well fit”( Classic !)
One of the few bright shows that has been an ordinary year in telly otherwise.

  6. Awesome show!
This was one of those shows i couldn’t believe i’d never heard about after seeing ity and how funny it is.

i just don’t think the US could get it right. Still i hope they try nd fail than don’t.

  7. This really has been one fo the sleeper finds of this year and we have the secondary digital chanels to thank. Without them, this would never have seen light of day.
Agree though that the Yanks will fark this up something chronic. It is not a program or premis for their delicate sense of humour (nor is Shameless, but that is another story). Can you imagine how the Yanks will handle the scene (I think it is in episode 2 of the first series where one of the girls and a friend said they went to London to pick up some vibrating love eggs and then wore then home?? The whoel thing is just too bizare to think about.
Looking forward to the next series…

  8. Anyone else think that guy on the far left looks like Chris tayler from the chaser? On the ad I also saw a guy that looks like a young Jack black, sliding across a classroom floor I think. Although I can’t stand how when Americans like a show they remake it instead of importing it (usally ruining the brand because the remake is so poor), it looks like this show is all about remakes/ look-alikes of famous people.

  9. I know it’s been said before, but I don’t understand why the Americans can’t just watch the original, and Brilliant! series and leave well enough alone.

  10. This is bad news, the Yanks will stuff it up completely because they just don’t have the same sense of humour that the Poms do, and that we understand down here. On the good side it will make the original Pom series seem even brighter. It has definitely been one of my favourite shows this year.

  11. At least it won’t have Simon’s horrific it-was-bad-even-in-the-late-90’s hairstyle. Other than that, I’m sure it’ll be worse in every way.

  12. I thought the US adaptation was dead.

I don’t get the point nor do I think it will work.

The inbetweeners works so well because of the crude british humor it won’t be anywhere near the same level with a US adapation it’ll turn into an American Pie TV Series.
