Rove daytime talkshow pilot at CBS

Rove McManus is poised to front a US daytime talkshow alongside US actress Valerie Bertinelli.

Rove McManus is poised to front a US  daytime talkshow alongside US actress Valerie Bertinelli, best known from One Day at a Time and Hot in Cleveland.

Variety reports that Say It Now is in development with CBS as a  replacement for As the World Turns which is due to end  in September.

As tipped by TV Tonight, a pilot was recently shot.

Variety says of McManus “the host has been looking at doing projects in the U.S. for some time, having previously worked with Steve Carell’s company on a potential show. McManus is a huge star in his native Australia, where he’s hosted a talkshow on the TEN Network.”

But the show has to compete with at least three other formats also vying to become the replacement for As the World Turns.

  1. Rove is a good guy. What’s with all the cynical d***s on here. Sure, he’s no Jon Stewart, but he’s better than most American talk show hosts

  2. You Rove haters obviously have no idea about the daytime chat shows. This combination is less random than Regis and Kelly and their show is huge. He’s a former actor from the 1960s and she’s a former sopaie actress.

  3. It seems everyone In this country is “Anti” all of our sucessful stars, you can never please the viewing public ,and I for one am getting sick of this tall poppy syndrome us aussies seem to dish out .

  4. @ Mark…. its quite easy to win 3 gold logies when your against even lesser known no bodies…. The logies are a joke in oz… everyone knows it. They mean nothing.

@Secret Squïrrel….he is a “mediocre talent at best” that has won awards. Which basically means there was nothing decient for anyone to actually vote for.

The shows of his I actually saw… yea I laughed….. laughted at him cos it was so embarrassingly unfunny.

What happened to his last “pilot” in the US eh?

I 100% agree. IMO they are just Rove haters with nothing better to do than just write comments like that.

I am not a fan of Rove and never really have been but the fact remains is that he is a huge star here if you like it or not. His achievements over the years have been well deserved and i wish him all the best in America. Over there he is relatively new to them remember so just because he has been around here for ages doesnt mean he will automatically fail.

    1. There’s no issue with a US entertainment journal phrasing Rove as a huge star in Australia, as a shorthand way of communicating to that readership how successful his brand has been. He’s a household name, if clearly a polarising one. You can pretty much count on two hands the number of successful stars-turned-production companies in this country (Somers, Vizard, Denton, Working Dog, Jane / Gina etc) and Roving has a place beside them. Not bad at his age. The Anti-Rove lobby is a bit of a broken record.

  6. I’m unconvinced he has what it takes to succeed in America. He doesn’t have what Americans want.

I think he is talented in many ways, with charm and charisma and a quick wit, but he needs a better format than just a bog-standard talk show, yet nobody is offering him anything else.

  7. @ Secret Squirrel His production company has made nothing but flops and failures and of course he has won awards, for all his time on TV he was the only talk show host this country had so of course he’s going to win awards because there was simply no competition and no one to stand in his way. He was also axed by Ch 9 if you recall and if it wasn’t for a third rate station like Ch 10 keeping him on air with such low ratings he would have gone and disappeared long long ago which is what is going to happen to him in the US.

  8. And if we were talking “mediocre talent” you just couldn’t go past Hey Hey It’s (Regurgitated) Saturday. I’m at a loss to understand how that has managed not just to make a comeback, but to have a viewing audience. Who watches it??

  9. I just love how some of you are so keen to come on here and try to cut the man down with your predictions of failure. You proffer your personal opinions as fact while dismissing evidence to the contrary.

“Huge star” might be a bit of hyperbole but you can’t deny that the guy is popular here. Whether you like him or not, he served his apprenticeship and worked hard to get to the top of the light entertainment tree in this country. Calling him “mediocre talent at best” completely ignores the fact that he has won numerous awards (both popularly and critically awarded) and that his production company continues to make several successful television programs.

Rove’s style as a host isn’t always my thing either, but I recognise what he has achieved and, like ducko and CatFan, wish him well in his new endeavours.

  10. Considering the massive lame factor which inhabits most American sitcoms and talk shows, perhaps US audiences will warm to his brand of humour. It’s not to my personal taste but I also wish him well. USA is a massive, crazy market and if he succeeds it’ll be through determination and hard work, which is what brought him success here.

  11. He’ll never make it, he was never a ratings success here it won’t be any different over there. The only difference is he’ll get the boot much quicker, I don’t think any network will put up with mediocre ratings year after year after year like our Channel Ten did for all those years.

  12. While Rove is a nice guy and I’m really proud that he started his career on Community TV in Melbourne, I’m afraid I’ve never thought that he was as good as others have said. Good luck to him anyway and hope the Americans warm to him.

  13. Rove a “huge star” in Australia, please. Rove is a mediocre talent at best. Even if Rove works in the States it won’t be for long. What IS funny is that he thinks he has talent…..
