Veteran US actor Nicolas Coster, best known for daytime drama Santa Barbara, has died, aged 89.

His daughter Dinneen wrote on Facebook, “There is great sadness in my heart this evening. My father actor Nicolas Coster has passed on in Florida at 9:01 p.m. in the hospital. Please be inspired by his artistic achievements and know he was a real actor’s actor! I will remember him as always doing his best and being a great father. Rest In Peace!”

UK born Coster has over 170 acting credits on television.

He played the self-destructive Lionel Lockridge on Santa Barbara from 1984 to 1988, but returned in 1990 and stayed until the show’s cancellation in January 1993.

He played chief of detectives J.E. Carson on The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo and later recurred as the millionaire father of Lisa Whelchel’s Blair Warner on The Facts of Life.

Costter accrused guest spots on daytime dramas Another World, As the World Turns, One Life to Live and All My Children with primetime appearances on dozens of series including The Defenders, Charlie’s Angels, The Blue Knight, Little House on the Prairie, The Rockford Files, Dallas, Hart to Hart, Wonder Woman, Magnum P.I. and Quincy M.E.

More recently, he appeared in a recurring role on crime drama The Bay.

Film credits included All the President’s Men, Stir Crazy, Reds, Titanic, The Desert Rats and Sea of Lost Ships as well as stage roles on Broadway in productions with Lawrence Olivier and Elizabeth Taylor.

  1. I was really sad to read this. I loved him in “Santa Barbara” and many other things. He was a wonderful actor, and from what I’ve read, a really nice guy. Sending love and condolences to his family, friends, fans.
