It’s dialogue is one of television’s bluest scripts, dropping the F word -and even the C word- with abandon…. and it’s coming to ABC2.

The HBO series set in South Dakota in the 1870s is a western with real grit. It stars Timothy Olyphant plus Ian McShane as pimp and entrepreneur Al Swearengen.

There were three series of Deadwood produced, with the series picking up eight Emmy Awards and one Golden Globe.

It has previously aired in Australia on Pay TV.

DEADWOOD: South Dakota … in an age of plunder and greed, the richest gold strike in American history draws a throng of restless misfits to an outlaw settlement where everything – and everyone – has a price.

Welcome to Deadwood…a hell of a place to make your fortune. The story begins two weeks after Custer’s defeat at Little Big Horn, combining fictional and real-life characters and events in an epic morality tale.

Located in the Black Hills Indian Cession, the ‘town’ of Deadwood is an illegal settlement, a violent and uncivilised outpost that attracts a colourful array of characters looking to get rich – from outlaws and entrepreneurs to ex-soldiers and racketeers, Chinese labourers, prostitutes, city dudes and gunfighters.

Among the settlers are ex-lawman Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant), the legendary gunfighter Wild Bill Hickok(Keith Carradine), and Machiavellian saloon owner Al Swearengen (Ian McShane). With its unflinching realism, adult themes and wickedly inventive storylines, Deadwood is an intense, character-driven drama that takes elements of the traditional western and turns them upside down.

July, 1876, after executing his last act of justice as a Montana Marshall, Seth Bullock relocates to a gold-mining camp known as Deadwood, where he and partner Sol Star (John Hawkes) look to start a hardware business. Bullock soon crosses paths with another new arrival – legendary gunfighter Wild Bill Hickok – and clashes with the formidable boss of the Gem Saloon and occasional deal broker, Al Swearengen.

It premieres on ABC2 9:30pm Tuesday August 3.

  1. the best tv series ever made, perfectly cast, and acted. How do pathetic shows like lost, desperate housevives etc run for 6 or more years and this emmy…. golden globe winning show end up on the scrap heap only after 3 seasons.

  2. @Matthew See : Ch9 only sold the rights to s1-4 to ABC, they showed s5 on GO!

I bought Deadwood years ago after hearing all the talk about it, a great series though not for everyone’s taste.

  3. Why???? Deadwood was intended to be four Series.. and was canned after three. Thereby leaving all story lines up in the air. If you’re looking to watch a series and expecting closure, look someplace else. (Advice from an annoyed fan of the series)

  4. Sounds like I’ll be tuning in. The ABC continues its solid run of great US adult drama – West Wing, The Wire, and now Deadwood.

    Al Swear-engen? Really?

  5. Fantastic. I adore Deadwood, if only it had been given that fourth season to wrap everything up.

What a perfect way for ABC2 to follow up The Wire, hmm, a replay of Rome & Carnivale next?

  6. What great timing, I was just about to shell out $75 for the DVDs. Now I can put that towards my 3D TV (not!). ABC2 keeps rolling out quality shows.

  7. it is replacing The Wire but the ABC is not showing the final Wire season. I thought the ABC was going to show the entire series of The Wire and not stop at the penultimate season.

  8. I’m so glad this astoundingly wonderful show might pick up a few new viewers. It really is up there with the best and deserves more recognition.
