…and while we’re on the subject of News clutter

On-screen clutter in News is growing. Here's traffic guy Andrew Crook in the TEN chopper.

Yesterday this site questioned the use of watermarks in Nine News.

So it’s only fair to highlight the less than subtle marketing used in TEN News.

Here’s traffic guy Andrew Crook in the TEN chopper.

This has been going on for a while ….but can someone please put a little subtlety back into this?

  1. And what about the crap that is shown on “Millionaire Hot Seat” just before the news? Since Hitchener appears every night telling us what’s coming up on the news, there is no point displaying a ticker at the bottom of the screen (mainly when constestants are answering questions) with the headlines.

  2. What makes this worse is the fact that 95% or more viewers watching this are already sitting at home, probably making dinner etc. They are not going to be jumping in the car.

While it might be nice for them to know hubby is going to be late home, you’d assume if he was really late, he’d pull over and give his wife a ring anyway.

What next – infomercials during the 5pm news?

  3. That’s ridiculous and funny. Agree that it turns me off the company too (if they’re that ham-fisted with graphic display, I’m not going near their website). The logo on his shirt has been shifted so far up to avoid being cropped by the camera that it’s almost on his shoulder.

@AndrewM: I hear that Rugs-A-Million (sorry for shouting) have a carpet sale on this weekend. Better nip in quick – you don’t hear about this sort of thing that often!

  4. @Russell – you’re on the money mate. I believe obnoxious advertising has the opposite effect to what they want. People get turned off by overt displays like we see here. A logo on the shirt would have been enough.

This is why I haven’t set foot in a Harvey Norman or Joyce Mayne store in years. Their ads are an affront to my senses and so I stay away. High rotation ads irritate me as well, for years on Ch10 every F1 Grand Prix had Tyrepower ads Every break. Needless to say I don’t buy from them either.

  5. @ Liz – so these are traffic reports? I counted 10 seconds of traffic yesterday and 20 secs on thank yous, sponsors mentions and chit chat. 10 seconds to cover one snarl up. These are not traffice reports but paid for content.

  6. As someone whose partner works in the traffic chopper business, I can tell you that the TV channels have nothing to do with the ad placement. The traffic reporting company actually pays the television stations to do the traffic cross, and they make their money from the advertisers paying to have their logo displayed. If we didnt have that advertising, we wouldnt get traffic reports at all.

  7. Christ. The funny thing is I’d imagine that actually has the opposite effect to the desired one. That is so blatenly and not clever, I’d imagine viewers now go out of their way not to go to that website. Advertsing needs to be smart and celevr nowadays, and I think people actually appreciate smart advertising. I don’t have aproblem with sponsorship of traffic updates, but do it in a clever way.
