Hey Hey back to Saturdays

It's official. Hey Hey will return to Saturdays when it comes back later this year.

Host Daryl Somers could barely hide his glee with confirmation announced last night that Hey Hey it’s Saturday would return to its namesake later this year.

The show will return to Saturdays when it is back for seven more episodes after the Commonwealth Games in October.

Somers made the announcement at the end of the first block of 2010 episodes last night. It is a win for fans of the show who had been longing for it to be reinstated on Saturdays.

Kylie Minogue proved to be hugely popular with the studio audience last night, performing two sexy songs, judging Red Faces and chatting to Somers.

When she joked that “this show will rate!” Somers couldn’t help but ask, “You don’t cook by any chance, do you?”

  1. This has to be the best news all year! Why? Because it means australia’s “funniest” home videos could be out of the schedule!! I absolutely lothe that show and would rather nine put infomercials on instead of it. Yes, I’m actually serious.

It also means I’ll watch a bit of hey hey, Wednesdays never suited me, even when I was home.

  2. Commercial TV has given up on Saturdays allowing Doc Martin to pull 1.5 @ 7:30. If no-one was watching outside of Melbourne why would they watch on Saturday when audience numbers are lower? Then again it will be October – maybe BORing will be back. I’d rather stick pins in my eyes than watch either.

  3. Again Daryl (and the diehard bogans …ahem… I mean ‘fans’) blaming masterchef when in reality most every other show is outrating ‘Hey Hey’…

Congrats on the saturday night move though.

  4. Well, I haven’t seen any of these return shows (Wednesdays are pretty full) but Saturday nights are a black hole for me TV-wise. So, if it’s on after 7:30 and I’m home, you can +1 viewer. I just hope I can put up with Daggyl for the whole show.

  5. Then again, maybe it’s a brilliant move (he says, answering his own question). It occurs to me looking at some of the posts here that Hey Hey’s core audience is in fact the demographic that would be home on Saturday nights…

  6. Good decision. I won’t hide the fact that I’m hoping that it also fails on Saturdays and then disappears forever, but this is a better idea than letting it die an embarrassing death on Wednesday night.

  7. Excellent news, finally at its rightful home! This should help Nine easily win the night and possibly even the week. The only problem now is we have to wait about another 10 weeks to see it again 🙁

  8. Yeah, I heard that, if that is best for Hey Hey (and not a weekday slot).. then I’m for it.

They didn’t say a time though. I’m wondering if it will start at 6.30 again?

  9. Well it should have been on Saturday’s in the first place (ironically the only time of the week Masterchef was Not on!)

Although I’ve been very vocal in my criticisms of the show and its outdated format, its better suited to Saturday’s and may yet rate its socks off.

The show still needs to update itself if it wants to continue beyond this year- and no that doesn’t have to mean dumping popular segments like Red Faces, etc, but to compliment those with a mix of new segments that could become just as popular.

And if it does rate well I’m happy to eat my serving of humble pie as I’ve said previously – even if Daryl gets on my goat with his endless old fashioned jokes…

  10. Isn’t this a downgrade? I guess it will rate better on Saturday nights because of the lack of competition but wouldn’t Nine have preferred good ratings in a midweek slot with higher paying ad spots?

  11. I’ve been waiting for something decent other than the occasional good movie, or AFL “blockbuster”, ever since Hey Hey was originally given the boot. Funnily enough the main show that i will watch now is the show that was axed in the first place.

It’s not perfect television, but it’s Australian and in my view a better alternative to what is on offer at 7 or 10 at the time.
