Hopman Cup for ONE

Under its new TV deal the Hopman Cup wins a daily session on ONE plus 20 hours of coverage on TEN.

The Hopman Cup has confirmed its new television partnership with ONE HD, following the end of its 15 year deal with the ABC in April.

The Perth-based event will see a daily session on ONE plus 20 hours of coverage on TEN.

“This is such an exciting time for the event,” said Tournament Director, Paul McNamee. “We are delighted to partner up with the newest player in Australian tennis being the TEN Network, and our viewers will no doubt enjoy the fresh perspective of our telecast.

“And it’s a spectacular line up. Some of the biggest and most celebrated names in the sport will play-off for the coveted diamond-encrusted trophies in January, Justine Henin will become the 22nd number one to participate and it is fantastic that Perth fans will get to see her in action”.

The teams announced today are:

* USA – Serena Williams and John Isner
* Serbia – Ana Ivanovic and Novak Djokovic
* Belgium – Justine Henin and Steve Darcis
* France – Kristina Mladenovic and Gael Monfils
* Australia – Lleyton Hewitt (partner tbc)

Remaining teams will be announced in October.

The 2011 event runs from 1-8 January at Perth’s Burswood Dome.

  1. Yay. That’s excellent news and well done Ten/One. So will they be showing just the day session, and not night??
Love this tournament, and to pull Serena, Williams, Henin, Ivanovic, Djokovic, Hewitt is impressive.

  2. I think we may see more and more sporting events shift their focus towards being aired on ten and ONE HD; if I were in charge of where my telecast would be I would go Ten/ONE purely because they have a 24 hr dedicated sporting channel; of course for sports not on the anti-siphoning list.

  3. @ Kuttsywood, they tend to package those warm-up tournaments together along with the Davis Cup as Tennis Australia official partner, that was part of the deal when Seven extended it for a few years which was last eyar i think.

  4. This is excellent news!! IMO exactly what One should be used for, and glad to see its not on that bullshit anti-siphoning list. Good work Ten!
Can’t believe the players they have secured for the tournamant!!
This *should* be the last year at the sh****y Burswood Dome and then it will be a big year with the move to Perth Arena for the 2012 tournament. If they can secure that calibre of players for a “regular” tournament, imaging what the playing field will be like in 2012!! :O

  5. Well done to ONE and Ten for picking up the Hopman Cup and no hard feelings to the ABC. I’m certainly supportive of the ABC picking up alternative sporting events that would otherwise not get shown by commercial television. Tennis obviously isn’t one of those.

  6. AAP says ONE will have 48 hours of broadcast while Ten will have another 20 hours including the final. The news is certainly welcome, although not many parts of the country receives ONE so people will have to watch Ten for daily highlights. There are 12 group stage sessions (two groups of four teams, teams within each group play each other once) spread over the first seven days, so I assume 48 hours for ONE is a minimum (4 hours for each session) as Hopman Cup matches often go overtime. And given Ten/ONE’s commitment to NBL on the nights of January 7 and 8, they will have to work around the schedule to find the timeslots for both the tennis and the basketball. When tickets officially go on sale on August 30 we will have an idea of broadcast times for daily sessions.

  7. CK: Only the grand slams and Davis Cup are covered by the anti siphoning list. This means, Seven will be preparing for a fight when Oz Open rights come up, as they may not retain the lead-in tournaments they currently cover i.e. Brisbane International, Sydney International and Kooyong.

  8. Good news that ONE have got tennis, even though it’s only an exhbition as such, would still like to see them go for actual tournaments like Wimbledon or ATP Masters events. But it’s a start.
