Mark Holden in cancer scare

Former Idol judge Mark Holden was diagnosed with thyroid cancer after discovering a lump in his neck last September.

Former Australian Idol judge Mark Holden was diagnosed with thyroid cancer earlier this year, after discovering a lump in his neck last September.

He is now recovering after undergoing a six-hour operation to remove the cancer five months ago.

Holden, 56, has told the Australian Women’s Weekly both he and wife Anna “were in shock” at the diagnosis.

“He (the doctor) explained that I had thyroid cancer, that the primary cancer was on my thyroid gland in my throat and the lump was a secondary indication.”

He still suffers restricted movement in his neck and worries he will lose his ability to sing.

The former Idol judge has been working as a barrister following the end of his TV role. In addition to some radio work, he also appeared on ABC’s Talking Heads in April.

  1. I am really sad and shocked to read this. I grew up watching and listening to Mark’s music and appearances on tv. He is a talented and colourful man. I hope he and his family ride this horrible experience with courage and come through it.

  2. I’ve been there and had that in 2008.

I still have two benign tumours in my neck now. Neck movement is a little restricted and can often feel tight, but it’s something you just learn to live with.

Just do what your endocrinologist advises Mark and everything should be fine 🙂
