It’s been on the cards for weeks, but yesterday Nigel Lythgoe was officially announced as returning as an executive producer of American Idol.

He served as executive producer for the first seven years, but more recently has been critical of the the show.

Lythgoe will join as executive produce alongside Simon Fuller, Cecile Frot-Coutaz and Ken Warwick for the 10th anniversary season that kicks off in January.

“Since we launched the original Pop Idol in England, I’ve remained close with Simon Fuller,” Lythgoe said who . “American Idol became a juggernaut of epic proportions, but to me it was always like home.”

Simon Fuller said Lythgoe’s unbridled passion has been missed.

This week Lythgoe told Variety he wants to bring Paula Abdul back as an judge. But Abdul is under contract with CBS to star in her own dance competition series.

  1. I believe that is true too

Australian Idol should come back with three brand new judges who people can relate too as well.

We need 2 record execs as well as a singer just because they know the pressure these contestents are feeling

  2. I would like the judges to be record producers or executives. Not those celebrity one like P Diddy (or what ever he’s calling himself these days), but real producers that are only interested in the music and not a self promotion of their latest album.
By having professionals who know what they are looking for, then the quality of contestants would greatly improve.
