Dead Heat!

"It's going to be a draw!" cried Bruce McAvaney. But it's good news for TV networks and media buyers.

“It’s going to be a draw!” cried Bruce McAvaney.

“Unbelievable!”

And at 68 points each Collingwood and St. Kilda tied the 2010 AFL Grand Final. The match could have gone either way in the closing minutes, but the rule of no Extra Time put an end to that.

The tie may be bad news for teams and spectators, but it’s good news for TV networks and media buyers who will be racing to do it all over again and soak up the revenue and ratings from a repeat performance. It takes a lot to mount a broadcast of this scale, but for Seven it will net them twice the eyeballs.

Not since 1977 has the Grand Final been tied. But now with multichannels and the very expensive 3D experiment the ramifications are far more involved.

Amendments on this one will ricochet right across the week, particularly if it impacts on The Footy Show (which had already wrapped for the year) and Game Day Prime Time.

Then there are the brekkie shows which had planned to ramp up NRL coverage next week. Its Grand Final takes place Sunday week.

And all of this on the eve of the Commonwealth Games. It will be a three-way sports mega-weekend.

Spare a thought for Producers who will be crewing all over again, and juggling logistics one more time.

The event is one of the biggest audiences of the television year.

So big they had to do it twice.

  1. Nine News Adelaide just said in their sports report the Footy Show are preparing a Footy Show ‘Grand Final’ special for Thursday night … backs up Garry Lyons comments on MMM earlier.

Good match … just glad Collingwood didn’t win 🙂

  2. ‘So big they had to do it twice.’
    Briliant call!
All I want to see is Before the Game! It is the best footy show on TV! I also quite like game day prime time but I missed it this week so I would be happy to watch it this week!
I turned to my mates after the game and said 7 must be licking their lips!

  4. Poor Seven. With the road cycling championships and rugby, and networks throughout the world hiring all the equipment for Delhi and the cycling, will there be enough trucks in the nation to broadcast in HD?

  5. Next Thursday (September 30) is supposed to be the day for Victoria, SA, WA and Tasmania to catch up on Home and Away episodes as they have fallen behind NSW and QLD due to the AFL finals. So what will happen to these episodes now? (BTW they are shown on 7TWO on Saturday afternoons)

  6. Apparently, Garry Lyon said on Triple MMM that the Footy Show would be on next week — but in the normal studio format (but isn’t the studio closed now?)

It was an epic game nonetheless.

  7. If the Tigers and Roosters can go an extra 20 minutes in an NRL finals game surely they can have extra time at an AFL grand final.

    As that player said:

    “What a joke”.

Anyway, I just can’t stop laughing. It’s so funny.

  8. amazing game

hopefully the big name footy shows are back on next week. another week of a build up, i just don’t know if it will be the same

and man, C7 camera angles need working (ultra close ups and extreme far shots were terrible)

  9. There is nothing on channel 7 next Saturday of any importance so AFL coverage will probably start from 11am or 1pm at the latest for a 2:30pm game start time. 7Mate will be cleared for the game to be in HD.

  10. the bloke and his son that sang the national anthem were terrible and the afl should be ashamed they alowed that to happen. you would think they would have learnt from their woeful mistake of alown idol contestants to sing before the gf in the past

  11. i don’t think the players will want to play another 10 to 20 minutes after 120 minutes of hard at it footy. this is the third drawn gf in the history of the vfl and afl. nothing will change. oh yeah i actually backed it at 41 bucks. i had 10 dollars on it

  12. It’s the most pathetic thing i’ve seen in the history of afl!!! All the afl wants is more money with another big game next week now!! what about all the people who paid and flew over there and had to stay in a hotel? Another 10 mins would have been good

    1. My hunch is Game Day Prime Time is a pretty safe bet. We’ll have to wait and see if the others reassemble. 7mate will be getting ready to adjust I reckon. But another 3D broadcast? Not necessarily. It will be a big week for Amendments!
