Former TV current affairs host Derryn Hinch has told his radio listeners he has been diagnosed with liver cancer.
Hinch, 66, will undergo major surgery “very soon” to remove a third of his liver.
‘‘It’s crazy, I look and feel better than I have in years,’’ he said.
‘‘I am knocked down, I’m not depressed, I don’t feel sorry for myself,’’ he told listeners.
‘‘I’m as passionate as ever about the causes that I’m fighting for and maybe even more so.’’
Hinch, who has been presenting the Drive programme for 3AW for many years, said he planned to continue a campaign against alcohol abuse.
Several years ago the former Seven and TEN presenter suffered a brush with death after contracting septicemia. In 2007 he told 60 Minutes he has cirrhosis of the liver with a “growth” on his liver that doctors feared may be a malignant tumour.
‘‘I intend to beat it,’’ he said of his diagnosis today.
‘‘As somebody once said ‘That’s life’.’’

Our days on earth are already written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Derryn will beat if if that is God’s intention.
This is so sad. Hope you recover Derryn.
All the best to Derryn – one of Australia’s best broadcasters.
I have no sympathy. What he said about Graham Kennedy after his passing i will never forget.
can’t believe a word he says after he announced that graham kennedy had died of AIDS which was totally unconfirmed. the way he announced that just before the funeral was the lowest of the low in regards to journalism and disrespect for Grahams family and friends – but I wouldn’t wish cancer on anyone.
Hope he beats it. If we lost such a genuinely entertaining, controversial, interesting fellow, it’d be a “Shame, shame, shame.”
Very sorry to hear this, I wish him a complete and speedy recovery.
all the best Derryn current affairs tv today is a joke when you compare it to what it was like when you were in the chair
I wish him good luck as I would anyone in his position.
