Footy Show revamp coming

The NRL Footy Show will undergo a major revamp for 2011 with Paul "Fatty" Vautin remaining as host.

The NRL Footy Show will undergo a major revamp for 2011 according to one of its biggest supporters, CEO David Gyngell.

“The show has been on air for 17 years,” Gyngell told the Sunday Telegraph, “so it’s time we put some work into it and relaunched the program next season.”

Paul “Fatty” Vautin will remain as host of the show which has a 17 year history.

The revamp is expected to see it more closely resemble the AFL version featuring Sam Newman.

“The show makes money and it still wins its timeslot,” says Gyngell.

The Footy Show may win its slot, but its only if you’re talking national figures, where it is boosted by the AFL version not the NRL.

Last week in Sydney and Brisbane, the NRL Footy Show was third behind World’s Strictest Parents and Burn Notice.

“Having a Footy Show is part of our commitment to broadcasting rugby league and we’ll just be looking at ways of making improvements, as you would with any show that has been on air for that length of time,” said Gyngell.

  1. To all the haters, if you have enough time to sit here and slander the NRL Footy Show, Fatty and the rest of the cast, you need to take a good look at Yourself 🙂 Channel Nine is in the money making business and is quite successful at it. Sh*t shows are culled regularly, they dont need your “business advice” like who the hell are you? What I suggest you do is to Not watch it duhh?! You want to “keep up with the code” ” the facts” etc, um watch fox sports news, if you can afford it of course. Thats just one suggestion 🙂 Maybe visit some NRL websites.. Wow theres another idea LOL, but no, you stop off here LOL, says it all really 🙂

Im also leaving a comment here because I along with millions of others, look forward to the NRL footy show every single week, I love getting to know players on a personalised level, I Love Beau Ryan’s segments and “Da Doggies”, Robbo n the Falcon, Darryl “The Man” Broman, Brad Fittler, Sterlo, Benji and Fatty too. Channel Nine aims perfectly at true fans of NRL, oldschool fans and the general majority. I think Id be the only one commenting that understands the actual medium lol. I wonder how many of the people here even have Team Memberships, probably all TAB members though I bet LOL!!
Oh and I love the Fattilac, cruise on NRL Footy Show for the next 17 yrs minimum xxx

  2. The NRL footy show is the worst sport related show on tv.

I want to watch the show to keep abreast with the goings on within the NRL code.

Fatty was never a good host and believe it or not is getting worse all the time. Sure he has been the 17yrs so far and thats great for him, but come on 9 if your looking to raise the ratings, try and get a host that can actually steer the program without looking like a d**k. The NRL are trying to lift their profile, then stop putting a fool as the host.

As for Broman, go back into the woodwork please, your not funny one little bit, so please stop trying, all you have is gutter humor and even then its not funny at all. the less said about him the better.

As for this being a variety show, there is no variety, leave that to hey hey its saturday. Yeah sure the sunday football show is on and that covers some great stuff, i would love to see the thursday night show to be a lot more in depth with the teams at training etc and hearing interviews from coaches and players regarding form etc for the round ahead.

Anyway. if you call this a revamp channel 9 then your kidding yourselves.

  3. I think since Paul Harrigan and Matty Johns left/got fired from the show its gone down hill, it used to be heaps more funnier and people actually wanted to watch it, but now its all talk with only a few funny moments throughout the entire show, if they want to revamp the show then i believe that they should only talk about the really important stuff about NRL and make the rest NRL related entertainment, cause if people aren’t being entertained then there is no reason for them to watch the show.

  4. I had not watched the NRL footy show in years. This year I decided to start watching it again, I think I have only missed one all year. I’m of the opinion that is actually really good, I laugh through out it and just find it entertaining.

I love the fat, Brohmen is great and it’s good when dell and Rabs are on the panel. Beau Ryan is funny as, but the little jockey Robbo he is the funniest.

I must admit I am over Mario though. Andrew Voss segment to kick things off is great.

  5. Time for the NRL Footy Show to be dealt with, Ol’ Yeller style. Compared to the AFL Footy Show it has no redeeming feature whatsoever. Losing Paul Harrigan and firing Matty Johns, the only people worth watching on the show, was a horrible decision by Nine.

The AFL Footy Show finished its regular season (barring the GF show) with their best program in years on Thursday. Love it or hate it, i can still make it through an episode and be entertained. I can’t last 10 minutes watching the NRL show.

    Kill it.

  6. I dont care if they revamp the NRL footy show just get the AFL footy show on live at 9.30pm on one of your alternate channels so we in NSW can watch it at a decent hour.

  7. No wonder the NRL show is still around The AFL Footy Show helps them in the overall figures, another great example of how the ratings system sucks, these are two different shows. The NRL Footy Show should have been axed years ago.The AFL Footy Show continues to be a great program

  8. It could be worse. Nine could take the NRL Footy Show off the air completely and then do what channels 7 and TEN do – shove AFL down our throats. All the AFL full promos, short ‘back form the break’ promos, matches and AFL themed shows have done absolutely nothing for the atrocious ratings that Melbourne game attracts in the NRL dominated NSW/ ACT/ QLD – where more than half of the population lives.

  9. Reading the comments, it sounds like both Sam and Fatty are not as popular as they once were. Maybe they should. do a swap and move Sam to the NRL show and Fatty to the AFL show? Okay, it would never happen, but it might have been interesting for a little while at least…

  10. “The revamp is expected to see it more closely resemble the AFL version featuring Sam Newman”.

Great… so we are going back to the toe-sucking, sexist version of the show from last decade???

  11. Another year, another revamp. If you look at both Footy Shows the main difference is obvious – the NRL version has a complete lack of entertainment value. Is it so hard to hire entertaining footy players? Obviously Matt Johns is gone, but Ryan Gerdler was good value. The rest of the people on there? Not. The AFL Footy Show has a mix of laughs – not always tasteful – and controversy and it has geniunely likeable hosts (even Sam on a good day, and on a normal day he’s still great TV). The NRL version lacks all of these things.

Look at Fatty, Peter Sterling, Andrew Johns, Wendell Sailor, Mario Fenech. Now compare them to Sam Newman, Gary Lyon, JB, Crawf or Billy Brownless. You could pretty much have the second group (Billy is borderline) host any show on Nine and have them do a decent, likeable, job. The first group? Not so much.

I guess they need a suitable replacement before they get rid of The Elephant In The Room – aka Fatty – and I know he has a lot of mates at Nine and it seems highly unlikely. But if they seriously want to get ratings, rather than just polish a turd, it has to be done.

  12. Ugh, more like the AFL version? I watched a bit of the AFL Footy Show for the first time this year just to see the contrast, and it’s like watching paint dry. They just sit around and smirk at each other.

I agree with Tango that the NRL version has improved lately, there’s more football talk and less irritating skits. I think the exit of Matty Johns and Paul Harragon has been a blessing. Johns has taken the lame toilet humour to his own crappy show and Harragon’s one segment, That’s Gold, has been replaced with the far superior Stuff You May Have Missed. But there’s plenty of room for improvement. Should be interesting to see what they come up with next year.

  13. Tango. The footy show (on thursday nights) originally wasn’t just about upcoming games. As the producers said. The footy show was about having fun and meeting players out side of football. The serious stuff was left for the Sunday programs. And when the footy show stuck to that formula. It rated very well. It was only when all the clueless masses of elitistism. Started to convince them, that they weren’t being “serious enough” did the ratings go down. Vaultin should stay. for a person who little media training he does a very good job. They shouldn’t revamp the show, they should rehash it. Take it back to the glory days of a few years ago. When it was a ratings winner. Back when they were putting on what people wanted to see. (Not only was it fun. It probably did more for the future of the sport as any “let’s be seriousz guyz” sport show on fox. Try keeping a kids attention while a bunch of suits talk the finer points of rules or the latest salary cap scandal.)And if the serious Neville’s, self imposing, latte sipping, elitist minorities don’t like it. They can always go watch sbs or something.
I have tried to understand attitudes of people like you. But i can’t grasp what is so bad about having a bit of fun about a sport.

  14. agree with Tango and Phoenix… give me Foxtel Ch180 NITV’s Barefoot Rugby LEague Show and Marngrook AFL Footy Show any day! I’ve been watching these shows for 3 years. Smart conversations, additional focus on grass roots level competition and people, and a tone I feel safe letting my kids watch without supervision! A great example of Indigenous people making positive in-roads in Australian TV!

  15. I hope they’re considering revamping the AFL Footy Show as well, its time Sam Newman to walk.

He was funny once, but as Hey Hey showed last year, Black face was funny once. It’s time to replace him with Billy Brownless or someone else or maybe replace it with Footy Classified, I’d happily watch that at a 9:30 Thursday time slot because being in Canberra I don’t get it otherwise.

  16. If this is a serious revamp then why is Vautin staying?? And does this mean they will actually talk about the sport they supposedly love (although it did improve a bit this year). As a female sports fan I still found it annoying and over the top and switched over to Paytv where the sport was important and the conversations were intelligent! It is rather obvious that the Footy Show boys grew up watching 70s football shows – can someone explain to them that they aren’t hosting one??
