Calls to dump ‘Spida’ Everitt travel show

Former AFL player turned TV presenter 'Spida" Everett makes Twitter comments that have resulted in calls for his travel show to be dumped.

Former AFL player turned TV presenter Peter ‘Spida” Everett has made comments on Twitter about an investigation of alleged rape involving AFL players that has landed him in hot water.

This morning he tweeted “Yet another alleged girl, making alleged allegations, after she awoke with an alleged hangover and I take it an alleged guilty conscience”

and

“Girls!! When will you learn! At 3am when you are blind drunk & you decide to go home with a guy ITS NOT FOR A CUP OF MILO! Allegedly.”

It follows a Police investigation into a woman making allegations about a sexual assault after Collingwood’s grand final win. Collingwood has confirmed two players were interviewed but no charges have been laid.

Reaction on Twitter was swift, with many calling for his travel show The Great Australian Doorstep to be dumped from Pay TV.

“I hope Spida Everitt is not involved in mentoring young footballers (or anyone else),” commented Chafule.

“Seems the AFL respect for women programme did not quite make it to Spida,” tweeted Cam3192.

Opinion website The Punch also weighed into the debate: “It would probably make more sense for his employers to demand that he visit a sexual assault counselling centre for some humiliating but educational face time with professionals who deal with rape victims. It would also probably be helpful if, rather than maintaining his puerile and laughable defence of his appalling comments via twitter, he had the decency to admit that what he said was just wrong, and to apologise and withdraw the remarks.”

Everitt responded to the reaction with:

“Clearly a lot of u are not reading my tweets correctly,” he tweeted. “As my tweet states very clearly everything is alleged.”

“I never said I support rape infact if u look I have never mentioned the word rape.”

A Foxtel spokesperson confirmed to TV Tonight that Everitt is not contracted with FOX Sports, the How To Channel, or any other Foxtel channels. The Great Australian Doorstep is not currently airing on the Pay TV platform.

It is however airing on Saturday afternoons on 7TWO, as one of the few first-run local products on the channel. The acquired series, produced by Everitt’s own production company, sees him travel around Australia in a mobile home with his family.

Seven had no immediate comment on the matter.

  1. obviously i do not know what happened on sunday morning, so i cannot comment on it, but as for spider’s comments, they are clearly the words of a frustrated and outraged ex-footballer, who maybe has experienced similar situations during his career. While his comments may be taken as a negative slur at women, i think the point he was ‘trying’ to make was that he believes his fellow footballers are innocent, and he truly believes, rightly or wrongly, that the girl is not taking responsibility for her own actions. His exaggerated use of ‘allegedly’ is a sarcastic way for him to say what he is thinking even though the facts have not come out yet. Dangerous to make any comments without the facts. I dont support his comments, but it always helps to think about it from their perspective, in this case, the footballer’s perspective. I guess we’ll see who is right when the truth is revealed.

  2. He is a moron because he thinks just because he uses the word “alleged” it means he isn’t making a statement.

Also, he says “alleged girl”, we know it’s an actual girl. “Alleged allegations”, moron. “alleged hangover”, i don’t think anyone has alleged there is a hangover involved? And he says “I take it as an alleged guilty conscience”, does he not understand how actually idiotic those statements are?
He clearly doesn’t understand the English language, why should we care about his opinion on anything when he is using his use of hte English language as his defence?

Bravo, well said. Concise, articulate, sums up the whole problem in a nutshell.
I note that the even the incurable yobbos & bogans have not tried to challenge your assessment. David should cut-n-paste your paragraph for the many (sadly) similar events of this nature in the years to come.
As Roy and HG have said many times in only partial jest, footballers should be kept in jail and only released for game day, then reincarcerated immediately after.

  4. As a feral collingwood supporter who was at the grand final rematch and proud we won, this story and the subsequent lynch mobs have tainted it a bit.

Sexual assault can be grabbing some one on the boob or crutch and pack rape. Ive seen and heard of the mob of women who deliberately go to all lengths to bag a famous person. I have also seen and heard of women being attacked by others because they are women and are deliberately tagged by blokes for a badge. Neither is right or acceptable.

I am a lesbian, a collingwood supporter, and equal opportunity advocate, as well as a feminist. I will reserve my judgement once all the facts are made clear because I wasn’t there and either were all the other dogs screaming for blood.

  5. I loved when I read this, laughter in irony of how much of a moron he is. I feel bad finding humour in a horrible situation though, how Allanah Hill of me.

  6. @bogan pride, his ignorance and stupidity derive from weighing in to the debate with a clear agenda before a thorough investigation has actually discovered what happened. In case the implication’s not obvious, it sounds like he’s saying that if you have a few drinks and go home with a footballer you have no grounds for complaining about anything that might happen. That’s what’s offensive and dangerous about it.

The worst part is, I doubt there is a way to make him understand the ignorance of his remark, nor the stupidity of those that defend him.

Well do us ignorants a favour. And at least try to point out his and our stupidity.

  8. @ boganpride – you were there were you? You were also at all the other alleged assualts too were you?

How do you know he ‘speaks the truth’, speaks the word of the ignorant , sexist bogan more like.

  9. Yuck, yuck, yuck!!! So sick of footballers of all codes feeling entitled to anything and everything that takes their fancy. The only remorse comes after they get caught out and exposed for the ignorant bogans they really are! Blech.

  10. I see what he is trying to say, but he is too inarticulate to express it in a way that isn’t offensive or unbalanced. It looks like he is just sticking up for the boys.

  11. Ohh its that Peter Everitt. I thought it was the one from Ready Steady Cook when I heard someone at work talking about it before.

I accidently caught The Great Australian Doorstep while flicking channels, it was so bogan and feral. I didnt realise this was the host.
