On the eve of its 30th anniversary tomorrow, SBS has won three United Nations Media Peace Awards.

The awards recognise media efforts to stimulate public debate about humanitarian and social justice issues.

Lani’s Story, a documentary produced by Blackfella Films’ Darren Dale and Genevieve Grieves, in association with SBS Television, won two awards: Best Television Documentary and Increasing Awareness and Understanding of Women’s Rights and Issues. It looked at one woman’s steps to address the issue of domestic violence, while also exploring how her family and her community came to terms with such horrific acts.

Dateline reporter Fouad Hady and producer Ashley Smith won the TV Current Affairs category with Iraq’s Deadly Legacy, a story which questioned why large numbers of Iraqi babies are being born deformed.
