America’s TV President didn’t get a free ride when he sat down to talk to Jon Stewart on The Daily Show.

Stewart asked the Obama a series of questions about his term in office and whether he had shifted from “very high rhetoric, hope and change” to “Please, baby, one more chance” in just two years.

Throughout the chat, Stewart played the role of disillusioned Democrat, disappointed by President Obama’s first 18 months in office. It gave his appearance a decide political edge rather than focussing on his personality. Obama was the first sitting US President to appear on the show.

“Are you disappointed in how it’s gone?” Stewart asked the President directly. Obama, whose appearance on the show comes less than a week before the Nov. 2 congressional elections, defended himself and his party by saying he was warned that it wasn’t going to be an easy ride.

“When I won and we started the transition … a whole bunch of my political folks came up and said, ‘You know what? Enjoy this now, because two years from now, folks are going to be frustrated.’ And that is, in fact, what’s happened,” Obama said.

“I look over the last 18 months, and I say we’ve prevented a second Great Depression. We’ve stabilized the economy; an economy that’s was shrinking is now growing. We’ve got nine months of consecutive private sector job growth … and we have done things that some folks don’t even know about.”

Stewart seized the opportunity to poke fun at Obama’s latter comment. “Are you planning a surprise party for us, filled with jobs and health care?,” Stewart joked.

Toward the end of the interview, after one of many long spiels by Obama, Stewart tried to butt in. “I appreciate you being polite,” Obama said.

“It’s just really hard not to talk,” Stewart squeaked.

  1. Odrama just the American version of Krudd; a spin king who came out of the wood work and snagged the top job in no time. It would be far more entertaining to see Colbert wipe the floor with him though!!

  2. @Jen The rally is being broadcast by comedy central in the US so will find it’s way to the internet within an hour.

@boganpride I don’t think Jon turn on him at all. He asked thoughtful questions in a sane manner.

  3. I felt Stewart didn’t even need to be in the room. Obama was quite frank throughout the ‘interview,’ highlighting his failings while also reminding the choir (audience) the great achievements over the past two years.

That said, it would’ve been heaps funnier had they allowed Colbert to interrogate him.

  4. Bit of a coup for Stewart and good on him for not toadying to Obama (also good on Obama for being there as he must have known beforehand that it wasn’t going to be a back-slapping session).

Guess that makes up for Colbert having the Vice President hand out hot-dogs to the service personnel in his audience a few weeks back!
