Altiyan wins The X Factor

35 year old forklift driver Altiyan Childs has won The X Factor, defeating 20 year old diva Sally Chatfield.

Altiyan Childs has won The X Factor.

The 35 year old forklift driver from Sydney defeated 20 year old Victorian singer Sally Chatfield.

18 year old Andew Lawson, mentored by Kyle Sandilands, was eliminated earlier in the Final.

Childs, who was mentored by Irish singer Ronan Keating, was the favourite to win the contest after a finding his groove with a series of 80s and 90s rock songs across the series. It was a “rags to riches” rise after many had questioned even making the Top 12.

While Childs proved popular with audiences he also developed a reputation for forgetting his lyrics. His wild performances were matched by headlines about erratic behaviour, including spending the night in a cave on Sydney shores.

Sally Chatfield, the hairdressing apprentice with the big voice, rarely sang a dud note across the series, emerging as a talented performer.

The Final included more performances from Jamiroquai, James Blunt and INXS.

The Seven series, revived after TEN’s attempt at the series in 2005, was plagued by problems beginning with the dumping of host Matthew Newton and ongoing questions about judge Kyle Sandilands showing enough interest in mentoring his acts. Ratings for the series have been below market expectations, especially in light of the huge costs said to be $22m.

But it has now been without its devotees, some spectacular production numbers and international musical acts including including Boyzone, Adam Lambert, Enrique Iglesias, Mike Posner, Jason Derulo, Ke$ha, Robin Gibb and Mel B.

Seven is yet to announce a renewal of the show for 2011.

Childs wins a recording contract with Sony and will release “Somewhere in the World” as his first single.

  1. well done Altiyan! you are not crazy….probably more sane than the rest of us.
as you have been subjected to mockery, it takes courage to be yourself in this crazy self obsessed world stay true to your beliefs as they are what makes you wonderfually different……the world is waiting for you!!!!

  2. We are all quick to judge and I did too in the beginning (thought Ronan was crazy) but if you take the time to watch his performances you have to admit he is a phenomenal live performer – world class in my opinion. He is born for this and won’t be fading into oblivion anytime soon, if ever. Get used to hearing his name for all the right reasons. Thanks Ronan for sharing him with us. You are a genius!

  3. I found Altiyan and Sally to be compulsive viewing, both brilliant. I am on the wrong side of middle age but actually got out of my comfort zone to vote for both of them and then finally for Altiyan. I have been searching for news about Sally though, surely she won’t just fade into oblivion now. I hope the show returns next year.

  4. The best man won. From the first time I saw him I knew he would be the one. Goodness is always apparent to those who appreciate the genuine and is always repaid in due course. Apart from these wonderful qualities he was absorbed in his performances so he did what came naturally, he sang and moved and entertained like no other could. I look forward to seeing him one day.

  5. @Mandy,

how can you call someones career on the decline when he had a number 1 hit just last year and also was the highest selling single of the year too?

Guy won over 7 years ago when Idol was at it’s peak and everyone was into it then. It was the only show of it’s kind so of course there was more interest in it so therefore it’s foolish to even compare Guy’s sales now to that of when he first won.

And as for Random, they were done no favours by the cheap attempt at a show channel 10 tried to do so they could capitalize on all the Idol mania hype going on at the time. They took alot of shortcuts in production and it showed.

You really need to stop with all your hate because it’s making you delusional.

  6. i have always thought people exaggerate the way people “forget” who these people are. sure not all 12 will be remembered 5 years from now, and few of them will be making new records, these is only so much space on the charts. but to say they will all be ‘forgotten’ is rediculous.
Sophie Monk, Tamara Jaber, Casey Donovan, Anthony Callea, Millsy, Ricki-Lee, ect. some have a decade between them and their respective talent show and i’d say a majority still know who they are. Altiyan will no be forgotten any time soon.

  7. @WikiEd…wow!!! What a fantastic post, you certainly did your home work. I came to live in Australia 3 years ago and fell in love with the sound of Guy Sebastian straight away. He is a fantastic vocalist and comes accross as a lovely person too. loved his performance on X Factor last night, nice to see him on Australian tele again as a singer.

Two other Sucess stories from reality shows are Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle…Now these two have made millions. 🙂

  8. Oh I wish all the haters would just shut the hell up and crawl back to where the came from! You don’t like singing reality shows… we get it. Doesn’t mean you have to constantly attack and attack and attack… I’m so sick of it!!!!!

  9. @WikiEd

please stop hiding behind all those misleading numbers. As the first winner of AI, it would have been impossible for him not to achieve all that. But these days he isn’t so big. As I said, his career is on the decline; I didn’t say that he has never been successful. Look at the performance of his latest albums and singles compared to his debut; it is obvious that he is on the decline. You don’t see any chart toppers acting as judges, do you?

My main point was that the winners of these talent show usually don’t go anywhere after their initial success unless they truly are talented. Remembers the last X-Factor winners, Random? What happened to them? And can you name all the Idol winners without looking them up?

I have nothing against Altiyan and I wish him all the best, but I am just saying, don’t be surprised when you never hear from him in a couple of years

  10. Have you been living in Altiyan’s cave @Mandy??? “Guy couldn’t make it on his own and turned to another talent show.” Five top 10 platinum/multi platinum albums, Nine Top 15 singles including 4 number ones. The most number one singles by any Australian male vocalist in ARIA chart history. Highest selling single of the last decade with his 4 times platinum debut, and 6 years later gets the highest selling Australian artist single of the year in 2009, triple platinum no less, which also came in at a very respectable #29 in the ARIA decade chart after only a few months of sales. 10 ARIA nominations, including 6 this year. A song right now sitting very comfortably in the Top 10 on itunes. Freshly signed for another long term contract with Sony because in their CEO’s words: “Guy is without a doubt one of Australia’s most talented artists and a truly great vocalist. Sony Music is incredibly proud to have been involved in Guy’s very successful career to date”. That is a career many a musician wouldn’t mind having.

  11. Saw this person on Sunrise this morning and could only think one thing – What a complete and utter tool.

@ tracey – made millions? Are you trying to tell me Ricki Lee and Shannon Noll have made millions? Are you quite sure about that?

  12. @Blake , there always seems to be a trend to rain on someones parade when It comes to someone In this country being successful . usually comes from being jealous and bitter .

  13. LOL – you all seemed to take my comment very seriously.

Well, you can defend Altiyan all you want. We’ll see who’s right in a couple of years.

And Guy’s career is on the decline. Ronan had a successful career, but his has also been on the decline. These people only accept to judge to boost their career. You never see a huge success with a judging role on these shows.

  14. You “predict” Aitiyan will flop….? You havent come across something revolutionary here guys.

What’s the lashing of any Australian artist who dares to try? Some of you need to go outside once in a while.

  15. I love reading all the judgement, especially those stating a lack of talent or those who compare to American shows (are you comparing a 22 million population versus 550million, hmmm). Reality is most of the Australian Idol and X Factor contestants have gone on to make millions. They may not be making the same coin that their American counterparts have but most Australian performers don’t because of our sheer population size and the level of investment that Australia can put up for each talent. I wish Altiyan all the best. He may be a little crazy, but he is a born performer with a massive heart. I hope that his success heals his wounds and that he is able to hit the world stage. There are few people who have the stage capability that he has, so I hope that he makes it. The difference between making it or not, is all about commitment, persistence and hard damn work.

  16. @ Mandy. Before you comment on any artist, Australian or otherwise, you need to get your facts straight. The music industry is rife with nay sayers regarding talent show leg ups. The thing is, if you use this exposure properly to your advantage, you will do really well, as Guy Sebastian has done. There are a lot of jealous people in the industry – Missy Higgins comes to mind who could have used this avenue to fast track fame. Guy has been smart enough to really do well with six albums selling well. He’s also an experienced voice teacher and has been for years. Can’t believe how stupid your comment is. If Altiyan Childs wants this enough for himself, his father and Ronan Keating, he will do wel and continue to do so. His version of the winner’s single was by far the best. Sally Chatfield will do well also.

  17. Good luck to Altiyan. I hope he can make the most of this opportunity. I really enjoyed the show and hope it comes back next year. If it does come back the judges really need to select people that can sing. A couple of the young boys this year may have looked good but were lacking in the vocal department. Unfortunately I could never watch the show live because the constant recapping and padding drove me crazy.

  18. @CanberraChr, the only reason Altiyan connected with viewers is because of the constant Channel 7 promos, the New Idea make overs, the cave dwelling, the Today Tonight stories about the cave dwelling, the favouritism shown on the show itself… but good luck to him, he’s sure to sell out the O2 in no time!

Pfft! None of the contestants on the X Factor were much chop at all. It’s like the 2005 series all over again. Altiyan will be the next Russell Gooley.
